Gourock Primary first embarked on Just Trading Scotland’s 90kg Rice Challenge earlier this year and we have a dedicated team of pupils who market the rice to our school community.
This has been a huge success and we have now almost sold out of our 4 batch of the delicious Kilombero rice!
Our group are very enthusiastic about the challenge. We are passionate about selling because we believe we can make a huge difference to Malawian child’s life. Every 90 kilograms of rice sold, enables a Malawian farmer to pay for a year’s basic secondary education for one child.
We have gained many skills for learning, life and work. We sell at school events such as Christmas and Summer fetes and P7’s termly Fairtrade ‘Kickback Cafe’.
Not only that, we stock check, put together order forms for our school community and most recently we have been devising a feedback form. We know we have lots of happy customers – they tell us all the time! Now we want to use their comments to help increase our sales!
We are only too aware of how important education is for creating opportunities in a child’s future and we decided to produce a rice recipe book to accompany each bag sold, alongside an information leaflet which educates customers about the benefits of buying.
Just Trading Scotland are in regular contact with us and we were really pleased when they said we were going to feature in the GTCS magazine. We loved reading the article and having our hard work recognised!
We’re ready to receive our next batch!
Well done Elizabeth, Jenna, Grace, Ruaridh, Rebecca and Conor. I think that you now could take any challenge on and succeed so keep the good work up as well as everyone else supporting them by buying the rice. It does really make a difference to people in Malawi so try and make that one difference, it is small but worth it. The lucky thing is that it is Fairtrade rice which supports our Fairtrade group – you should definitely buy Fairtrade products.
A great, supportive post Orla! Thank you! Can you tell me why buying Fairtrade products is a good thing? Who and what benefits?
The farmers benefit because they get the right or good amount of money for their fairtrade products so if you were looking for fairtrade products you could buy things associated with chocolate, clothes or fruit and veg they are 10 times better than other products from companies.
You certainly are a super advocate for Fairtrade! The Global Citizens and Mrs Hunter’s Fairtrade group will be pleased!
Thank you Orla
Your welcome it is always nice to stay positive
Are the global citizens group going to be going to the warehouse
You will be, yes!
Orla you were very positive that was very kind of you to say all of your nice words!
Well done global citizens keep up the good work.
I am so proud of the global citizens, thank you Orla for the positive comment.
I can’t wait to buy more of the rice . I love it .
Well done to the Global Citizens for featuring in the GTCS magizine. Not only is the rice for a great cause, it is also super DELICIOUS!!!
Great work guys, keep it up!
I love being a Global Citizen, it is so much fun. I can not wait until the weekend because we are delivering a presentation to our school church, Old Gourock and Ashton during the Sunday service. We are hoping to encourage the congregation to take on Just Trading Scotland’s 90kg Rice Challenge and begin selling batches too! I know my words for the presentation off by heart. David, our minister has offered to buy our recipe books from us to sell with their first rice batch. This will allow us to purchase our 5th batch! We are making a difference!
Guy’s keep up the amazing work .
Well done global citizens you did an amazing job in church . Do you know how many bags you sold yet?
So positive! Great to have encouragement!
The Global Citizens is my favorite responsibility in class, I enjoyed promoting the 90kg challenge at the church and in the promotion video for Just Trading Scotland’s website. Getting to know about the people we are helping and supporting is incredible. Just by selling the rice we are sending a child to secondary school for a year, we have already sent 4 children to school! Although I was friendly with the people in our group before, I have got to know them much better and we make a great team!
