A team  of Sixth Year students from Inverness Royal Academy has won through to the UK finals of a prestigious competition in Chemical Analysis.

Finlay Clark, Lewis McCheyne and Igor Zamorski clinched their place in the final at Keele University in June when they came out on top against nine rival schools in Thursday’s (March 10th) North Scotland heat at Aberdeen’s Robert Gordon University. All the team members are part of the Royal Academy’s 11 strong Advanced Higher Chemistry class.

The contest comprised finding solutions to three separate problems – identifying the medication on which a fictional victim overdosed, establishing the acetic acid content of a vinegar sample and detemining possible copper contamination in water.

After almost four rigorous hours of experiment and calculation in three sessions, the Royal Academy trio was judged to have obtained the best results ahead of a field of rivals from Dundee, Aberdeen and other locations in the North.

“We are very proud of what this team has done against some pretty good opposition,” said Principal Teacher of Chemistry Pauline Murdoch who coordinated the effort. “An important part of Chemistry is to be able to work accurately, either independently or in a team, sometimes under a bit of pressure and these students have showed they can do just that. The Advanced Higher class is always an important element of our department and it’s very pleasing to see these three achieving at such as high level. I hope they can do just as well in the final at Keele.”

The Parents’ Information Evening for SECOND YEAR pupils will take place on the evening of Wednesday 16th March 2016 in the Theatre, starting at 6.30pm.  This is an informal evening where you will be given a short presentation about the options available in third year.  You will then have the opportunity to ask questions of members of the school’s Senior Management Team.

It is hoped that the evening, in conjunction with the S2 Parents’ Meeting, will allow you to help your child make more informed choices when they are completing their option choice forms.

Refreshments will be provided in the foyer.
