NVA Hinterland

Over the past eight years NVA has been leading ambitious proposals to reclaim the future of the world-renowned, Grade A Listed St Peter’s Seminary complex and its surrounding Victorian-designed landscape near Helensburgh, Argyll and Bute. The primary aim is to establish a place for communities from across Scotland and further afield to engage with high quality public art, heritage and performance by creating a new and exciting cultural resource that aims to be open to the public and be fully operational in 2018.  The heritage site, landscape and the future public programme of heritage, learning and cultural activities offer a variety of opportunities for schools in the coming years.

The new resource will offer great potential for a wide variety of formal and informal learning for a variety of age groups. The wealth of thematic areas presents opportunities for study in a range of subjects, including social history, the natural environment, architecture and construction.  St Peter’s seminary is a building of international significance and has attracted interest from students engaged in a variety of disciplines, with programmes based in architecture, conservation, human geography and heritage.

In March 2016, Hinterland (St Peter’s Seminary and its surrounding Kilmahew estate) will launch Scotland’s Festival of Architecture, presenting a key highlight to the Scottish Government’s Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design.  Fifty years on since the building opened, you can explore this architectural masterpiece reanimated at night for the first time by public art company NVA. From 18 – 27 March, Hinterland will reveal the full glory of the towering concrete ruin, combining moving light installations and projection with a haunting choral soundscape.
