Why did I choose to become a teacher?

For the past few years, I have known that working with children was the career path I wanted to follow. Completing a one year HNC in Childhood Practice affirmed this belief. Having experience of working with children during their nursery transition phase and seeing the enjoyment, and confidence, they can gain from joining school as a primary one, assured me that teaching would be the career for me.

As a child, I did not particularly enjoy school; the same routine everyday did not present me with an enticing environment in which to learn. As a teacher, I will strive to create an exciting and inviting classroom which is tailored to my pupils in order to support and benefit them as individuals.

As a teacher, I also aspire to be a supportive role model for each child. Teachers do not only have the ability but the obligation to provide this service.  This drives me to be a teacher who both listens to, and respects my pupils.

My many years in the Boys’ Brigade contribute to my desire to not only make education enjoyable, but provide a safe space in which children feel comfortable to learn. The BB gave me opportunities to design and carry out activities with children of a primary school age, as well as the chance to support them and give them someone to confide in.

  1. Iain,
I really enjoyed reading the above summary of your motivations and aspirations to become a teacher. You also highlight some of the influential experiences and organisations that have assisted you getting to this point. Your writing style is easy to follow, well structured, and with a balance of points and sentence length. You start to bring in some important values such as opportunity, safety and trust. The next stage be to explore what these terms mean in relation to your own teaching philosophy. This is, however, a journey rather than an essay. Well done.
