What intrigued me to study Primary Teaching

I have always felt passionate about helping others. Since starting secondary school I knew I wanted to work with children as a profession and after partaking in work experiences I knew Primary Teaching was the route I could see myself pursuing. Whilst at school, I relished every opportunity that allowed me to work with Greenwood’s younger pupils. During my free periods, I would volunteer in classes working with children of various learning abilities and ages.

I was also given the opportunity to participate in work experience. I found myself in a fortunate position as I secured a placement in both a nursery and primary school setting. I appreciated my time at the nursery as it provided me an insight on pre-school education however I flourished in my role in the primary school. I received a glowing report at the end of the week and told I was welcome back any time. After becoming a sixth-year student, I took the opportunity to go back to the primary school two afternoons a week to volunteer in my own time which clarified that this was the job I wanted to pursue. Alongside volunteering at Dreghorn Primary, I had also volunteered for two years at my local Brownie Unit which I formally attended. This allowed me time to work with girls of primary ages to achieve their badges.

After leaving school, I decided to take a year out to attend college which further enhanced my knowledge of working with children. I received a placement whilst at college which was two days a week for a year. I enjoyed going to placement and working with the children; especially seeing their growth and development over the year. This experience highlighted the difficulties teachers face however also showed how rewarding the job is and how privileged teachers are to help shape the future generations.
