Disasters

Our task for this week was to produce a presentation about natural disasters which we would deliver to our sections. Our group was given the topic of volcanoes, we were given a week to meet together in our group and discuss what we wanted our presentation to include.

We came to a decision that our presentation would be informative and also give examples of lessons we could carry out in a classroom to teach children about this natural disaster. Some of which we had already been able to take part in during a tutorial last week, for example making volcano using vinegar, baking soda and food colouring.

I found this task very helpful as it allowed me to work on my team building and time management skills as it was hard to find time where each member of the group could come together. I believe it was useful to present in front of a small group as it allowed me to feel like I was in a real class situation and having to teach everything I had learnt to my peers.

Interdependence

To learn more about interdependence we were able to as a group visit two different dairy farms which operated in completely different ways. One relying solely on technology to milk the cows and the other being a small dairy farm which the farmer had to milk the cows. Before going to the farms, I was quite sceptical as to how I would feel especially due to the cows not being allowed outside in one of farms. However, once I had visited both farms I felt reassured that both farmers cared about the welfare of each cow and wouldn’t do anything they felt affected a cow in a negative way.

This outing allowed me to realise how much work goes into getting our milk and how much work must go into getting everything we eat and drink. Something that has never crosses my mind, what is happening in the background. It was a very eye-opening experience and has made me want to look further into dairy and meat production and the rules and regulations famers must follow.
