St Angela’s Primary is delighted to be recognised as a Silver ‘Rights Respecting School’. This award is given to schools who have shown a commitment to putting the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) at the heart of the school’s ethos and culture.
We are now on our journey to the Gold Award.
UNICEF is the world’s leading organisation working for children and young people and their rights. These Rights are based on what a child or young person needs to survive, grow, participate and fulfil their potential.
Through participation in the Rights Respecting Schools award, children’s rights are learned, protected and promoted.
The potential impact of participation in the RRSA can be:
- Improved self-esteem and feelings of being valued and listened to
- Increased levels of respect for each other, leading to improved relationships with other pupils and staff
- A sense of security as rights respecting language is used consistently throughout the school
- An understanding and respect of cultures, beliefs and abilities different from their own
- A wider and deeper understanding of the world in which they live

Our Committee
Our Committee have worked together to identify targets for the year ahead.
1 – To inform our wider community about our Rights in St Angela’s.
2 – To develop a calendar of important events linked to our Rights.
3 – To continue to share information about the articles of the UNCRC.

Our committee have continued to inform our school community about the articles of the UNCRC through our Assemblies.
We have been taking action to promote the Rights of others through our Dragon’s Den Social Enterprise project.
All classes claimed their Right to be listened to and to share their thoughts freely. (Article 12 & 13) to decide on the who’s Rights they wished to advocate for.
Each stage pitched an idea to support a specific group. These ideas ranged from a cultural recipe book (Article 30), Nursery rhyme video for our Primary 1 transition pupils (Article 28) to Welcome tote bags for refugee children (Article 22). We had our own fabulous Dragon’s Den day and the winning classes were chosen by a special panel of Dragons. The winners were P5 and P5/4 with their Totes Creations refugee bags and our P1’s with their idea of reusable school bags. These classes went on to represent St Angela’s at Glasgow City Chambers and were awarded with a runner’s up certificate. We were so proud.
Our Primary 3 pupils have been campaigning for our Right to life and survival (Article 6) through their air pollution project. They learned about what air pollution is, what causes it and what affects it can have on health. They created their own video to teach others about air pollution and how we can reduce it.
