While education has changed in structure and language, many aspects are more familiar than they first appear.<\/p>\n<p>This section is designed to help explain what today\u2019s qualifications roughly equate to and what that means in practice for pupils.<\/p>\n<p>At Rosshall, the Senior Phase usually runs from S4 to S6. Unlike the system many parents will remember, qualifications are not fixed to a single year group.<\/p>\n<p>This means that young people may study National qualifications at different points during the Senior Phase, depending on their needs, progress and future plans.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #333399\">National 3, National 4 and National 5 \u2013 What do these compare to?<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>National 5<\/strong><br \/>\nThis is broadly comparable to <strong>Standard Grade Credit level<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Assessed through a final exam and, in many subjects, coursework, a folio and\/ or an assignment<\/li>\n<li>Expected for pupils aiming to progress to <strong>Highers<\/strong> in S5<\/li>\n<li>Requires independent study, homework completion and exam preparation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>National 4<\/strong><br \/>\nThis is broadly comparable to <strong>Standard Grade General level<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No final external exam- all internally (in school) assessed<\/li>\n<li>Assessed through coursework, unit passes and an Added Value Unit (like an assignment)<\/li>\n<li>Focuses on building skills and confidence rather than exam performance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>National 4 is a valuable qualification and a positive outcome, particularly for pupils who benefit from ongoing assessment rather than exams.<\/p>\n<p><strong>National 3<\/strong><br \/>\nThis is broadly comparable to <strong>Standard Grade Foundation level<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Focuses on core skills and understanding<\/li>\n<li>Internally assessed<\/li>\n<li>Often part of a supported or stepped learning pathway<\/li>\n<li>Is normally the minimum we expect of all of our pupils, no matter the barriers they may face<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>National 3 helps pupils build confidence and skills and can be part of a progression route to National 4.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Highers <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Highers<\/strong> are broadly similar to <strong>Higher Grade qualifications<\/strong> from the past, but with some key differences:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Usually taken in <strong>S5 and S6<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Greater emphasis on:\n<ul>\n<li>independent learning<\/li>\n<li>extended writing<\/li>\n<li>critical thinking<\/li>\n<li>essential for entry into University and some College courses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Final exams are important and coursework often contributes to the overall grade- normally in the form of an assignment or folio.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Highers are demanding and represent a significant step up from National 5, particularly in terms of workload and expectations.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #333399\"><strong>What does this mean for parents?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You may notice that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>pupils of the same age are studying <strong>different levels<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>a pupil may move between levels across years<\/li>\n<li>qualifications do not always follow a \u201cstraight line\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is normal within the Scottish system and reflects a focus on <strong>individual success<\/strong>, not comparison with others.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A National 5 in S5 or S6 carries <strong>exactly the same value<\/strong> as one achieved in S4<\/li>\n<li>Colleges, employers and training providers understand these pathways<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #333399\">Frequently Asked Questions<\/span> <\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Does my child have to achieve National 5 in S4?<\/strong><br \/>\nNo. National 5 can be taken in S4, S5 or S6.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Is a National 5 in S5 or S6 worth less than one in S4?<\/strong><br \/>\nNo. It is exactly the same qualification.<\/li>\n<li><strong>If my child doesn\u2019t move straight on to Highers, are they falling behind?<\/strong><br \/>\nNo. Many pupils take more time to build skills and still move on to positive destinations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do colleges and employers understand these pathways?<\/strong><br \/>\nYes. Colleges, employers and training providers are very familiar with Scottish Senior Phase pathways.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Why are pupils of the same age doing different levels?<\/strong><br \/>\nBecause young people develop at different rates. Pathways are based on what best supports success.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Can plans change during the Senior Phase?<\/strong><br \/>\nYes.
