Newton Farm Primary School and Nursery Class

Our Week in Room 7

The boys and girls have worked hard since returning from the October break. We did Beat the Street twice this week and were super excited to see some of the houses nearby have started displaying spooky Halloween decorations- we had lots of fun spotting them as we walked.

During Health and Wellbeing we discussed the importance of different medicines and continued our work on keeping safe. Before the break we played an online game which showed how tricky it can be to tell the difference between safe and unsafe substances. To link in with this topic, our role play area is currently under construction and our new doctor’s surgery will be unveiled next week!

In Numeracy, the circle group revised numbers 0-5 in lots of active ways and the triangles worked on identifying numbers to 20 and finding the missing number from sequences.

We started a new Science topic this week – materials, we started off by exploring what the term ‘materials’ means and then looked for different materials around the class. We learned that some materials are natural and others are man made. We then used our Colourful Semantics describing cards to discuss the properties of different materials. Later on in the week we again focussed on descriptions are were able to describe character features – colour, shape and sizes!

In music, we learned about pitch and had lots of fun making high and low pitch sounds with our voices- there were lots of giggles that afternoon!

As we near the end of our castles and knights topic we decided to create our own very own shields- we already know that each knight’s shield was unique and told a story about it’s owner so we researched the meaning behind particular colours, patterns and animals and used these to design our own coat of arms!

Halloween is next week so our Art lesson today focussed on colour and shape, using chalk and a template we were able to create these rainbow ghost shadows- I’m sure you’ll agree they look spooktacular!
