With flu season coming up the boys and girls in Room 13 decided to investigate some of the ways we can help prevent the spread of the flu. The pupils found that one of the main ways to stop the flu and some other common illnesses spreading, is by washing our hands! Lots of the sources we found cited this as a great way of helping to prevent a flu outbreak, but we wanted to see for ourselves how much of a difference hand washing makes, so we conducted an experiment.
In our groups, we each touched a piece of fresh bread with our unwashed hands and then washed our hands thoroughly with soap and then touched another piece of bread. These were then sealed in a bag and all we had to do was wait! We are expecting to see lots of bacteria in the form of mould on the bread we touched with our dirty hands and less, if any on the bread we touched with our clean hands. However, I’m afraid we are still waiting for any changes, but we are a patient bunch and will post an update when we see some results.
In the meantime, we designed and produced some Flu Prevention Awareness posters to be posted around our school to encourage our fellow pupils to wash their hands too. We hope you like them!
