A sports club, for example, is set up to give its members the opportunity to join in with their activity.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Ownership<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Charities are owned by their <strong>members<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Control<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Charities are controlled by an <strong>elected Committee <\/strong>or <strong>Board of Trustees<\/strong> whose job it is to oversee the management.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Finance<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Charities are funded by members\u2019 <strong>subscriptions<\/strong>, <strong>donations<\/strong> and <strong>fund-raising<\/strong> events<\/li>\n<li>Charities often also carry out <strong>trading<\/strong> activities through shops and catalogues.<\/li>\n<li>Charities may be awarded <strong>grants<\/strong> from the lottery, government or other charities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Advantages<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>They create opportunities for people to follow ideals, believes and hobbies.<\/li>\n<li>They are entitled to relief from some taxes and may receive grants from the government or other the lottery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Disadvantages<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>They may find it hard to raise enough funds to operate \u2013 they compete with other charities trying to raise funds.<\/li>\n<li>Volunteers may lack the skills and knowledge to run the organisation efficiently.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>Social Enterprises<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Social enterprises must be run in an ethical manner eg good terms and conditions for staff, environmentally friendly products and practices.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Ownership<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>A social enterprise is an organisation that has been set up by private individuals or groups for social and\/or environmental purposes.<\/li>\n<li>Social enterprises exist to make a profit or surplus, but these must be reinvested into their social or environmental purpose.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Control<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The organisation is run and controlled by a <strong>board of directors<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Finance<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Social enterprises can raise finance through crowd-funding, loans, donations and selling their products.<\/li>\n<li>Profits are reinvested into the business<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Examples of social enterprises include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Big Issue<\/li>\n<li>Glasgow Housing Association<\/li>\n<li>Isle of Eigg Heritage Trust<\/li>\n<li>Capital Credit Union.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Advantages<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Social enterprises can attract loyal employees and customers who support their aims.<\/li>\n<li>Social enterprises may receive tax incentives and grants.<\/li>\n<li>Profits must be reinvested to support the work of the social enterprise<\/li>\n<li>Social enterprises provide self-sustaining solutions to social and environmental problems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Disadvantages<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Trading practices must fit with the ethics of the organisation\n<ul>\n<li>they cannot use suppliers who do not treat their workers well look after the environment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>More difficult to set up than a voluntary organisation in terms of registering and complying with the Companies Act.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Charities\/Voluntary Organisations Charities are not-for-profit organisations, but they usually aim to raise funds for support good causes eg Oxfam, Shelter etc. Clubs, political parties and religious organisations are charities.
