Charities\/Voluntary Organisations<\/span><\/h2>\n

Charities are not-for-profit<\/strong> organisations, but they usually aim to raise funds for support good causes eg Oxfam, Shelter etc.<\/p>\n

Clubs, political parties and religious organisations are charities. A sports club, for example, is set up to give its members the opportunity to join in with their activity.<\/p>\n

Ownership<\/span><\/h3>\n

  • Charities are owned by their members<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Control<\/span><\/h3>\n
      \n
    • Charities are controlled by an elected Committee <\/strong>or Board of Trustees<\/strong> whose job it is to oversee the management.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Finance<\/span><\/h3>\n
        \n
      • Charities are funded by members\u2019 subscriptions<\/strong>, donations<\/strong> and fund-raising<\/strong> events<\/li>\n
      • Charities often also carry out trading<\/strong> activities through shops and catalogues.<\/li>\n
      • Charities may be awarded grants<\/strong> from the lottery, government or other charities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Advantages<\/span><\/h3>\n
          \n
        • They create opportunities for people to follow ideals, believes and hobbies.<\/li>\n
        • They are entitled to relief from some taxes and may receive grants from the government or other the lottery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Disadvantages<\/span><\/h3>\n
            \n
          • They may find it hard to raise enough funds to operate \u2013 they compete with other charities trying to raise funds.<\/li>\n
          • Volunteers may lack the skills and knowledge to run the organisation efficiently.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            Social Enterprises<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

            Social enterprises must be run in an ethical manner eg good terms and conditions for staff, environmentally friendly products and practices.<\/p>\n

            Ownership<\/span><\/h3>\n

            • A social enterprise is an organisation that has been set up by private individuals or groups for social and\/or environmental purposes.<\/li>\n
            • Social enterprises exist to make a profit or surplus, but these must be reinvested into their social or environmental purpose.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              Control<\/span><\/h3>\n

              The organisation is run and controlled by a board of directors<\/strong><\/p>\n

              Finance<\/span><\/h3>\n

              • Social enterprises can raise finance through crowd-funding, loans, donations and selling their products.<\/li>\n
              • Profits are reinvested into the business<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                Examples of social enterprises include:<\/p>\n

                • Glasgow Housing Association<\/li>\n
                • Isle of Eigg Heritage Trust<\/li>\n
                • Capital Credit Union.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                  Advantages<\/span><\/h3>\n

                  • Social enterprises can attract loyal employees and customers who support their aims.<\/li>\n
                  • Social enterprises may receive tax incentives and grants.<\/li>\n
                  • Profits must be reinvested to support the work of the social enterprise<\/li>\n
                  • Social enterprises provide self-sustaining solutions to social and environmental problems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                    Disadvantages<\/span><\/h3>\n
                      \n
                    • Trading practices must fit with the ethics of the organisation\n
                        \n
                      • they cannot use suppliers who do not treat their workers well look after the environment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
