\/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After receiving\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">CLPL funding from the Education Scotland STEM Nation grant this year, training was offered across the Islay cluster in digital skills.\u00a0 One of the key developments implemented<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in Port Ellen and Bowmore primary<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was to train staff in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the use of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Seesaw as a digital PLP tool<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to replace cumbersome and time<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">consuming learning logs.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Under a joint headship both schools decided to invest in the paid for Seesaw for\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">school\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0version of the App<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0 This version allowed us t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">o have continuity of progression throughout a child\u2019s time in school and also to track the Es and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Os<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0across subjects with its skills tracking tool.\u00a0 It was great to be able to include video, audio and photos into a body of evidence for achievement across a level, as well as comments and feedback from teachers and students on their learning and next steps.\u00a0 And parents had access to their children\u2019s learning through the family\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">app and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0could leave comments as well.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Then\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Coronavirus<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">happened and schools were going to close.\u00a0 We\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">quickly handed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0out home learning codes to pupils and parents and got them to download the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">class\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">app at home, enabling them to continue their learning remotely.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ipads<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0were provided for families without technology.\u00a0 Suddenly Seesaw was not just a PLP, but a home learning tool, one that could be used by children from ELC to P7 to learn remotely.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Teachers from P1 up plan and provide a weekly grid of learning activities for pupils to work with that have a good balance\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">across<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0literacy, numeracy, health and wellbeing, STEAM and other\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">curricular area<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0emphasis\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">spending\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">as much\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">learning\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">time offline as on<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a device, by taking advantage of our fantastic environment here on Islay<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0 We have seen some examples of truly outstanding pupil learning happening at\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">home and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0share it on our Twitter feeds.\u00a0 We even had a retweet from NASA for one of our rocket building STEAM activities!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Pupil engagement\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is something we have worked hard to maintain<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in the move to remote learning<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0 One of the key benefits of Seesaw is the ability to track engagement across the school; school admins can access a spreadsheet each week that shows how often children have posted and which activities have been completed, so we can quickly identify children wh<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ose<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0engagement suddenly falls off and intervene.\u00a0 Staff have regular Google Meet discussions where they share their personal success stories with engagement; we quickly realised that regular video messages from teachers and audio feedback\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">helped engagement- one parent said it was like having the teacher in their home.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is particularly successful with early years.\u00a0 Staff have also developed their digital skills to improve engagement, with some creating virtual Classrooms using Google slides and personalised\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">B<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">itmojis<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0 Here children can click on items in the class to link them to a video message from their teacher, a learning activity, video or document online.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0 We have also used physical means to engage; early years sent sunflower seeds through the post for their children to plant.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Finally,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0we share successful learning stories that aim to inspire other learners through shared Seesaw posts to all the students and parents, Seesaw blogs and Twitter.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When there ar<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">issues with engagement, we\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have implemented a variety of measures<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to help<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We send encouraging messages to parents and pupils, have made phone calls home and have provided\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ipads<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and dongles where needed so access is not a barrier.\u00a0 For some\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">parents<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0physical materials in the form of textbooks and worksheets have provided extra\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">support<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that makes them less anxious.\u00a0 One of our key aims once schools are back is to find a way to provide more extensive training for parents so they are more confident in what will be a model of blended learning.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0 All of the school community are glad that we chose to implement Seesaw in schools before the crisis, a versatile tool that has helped us continue to engage children and support them and their families at this
