In the Scottish Government&#8217;s reopening Schools guide as well as Local Government guidelines we have seen the term blended learning being talked about. What does this mean? We know that blended learning means that it uses a number of different pedagogical approaches including distance learning and prudential learning but what else does it incorporate?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Blended learning is a generic term given to a number of different approaches involved in synchronous and asynchronous teaching using online tools as well as being present in a classroom. This can have a number of different names and approaches:<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Rotational learning, flexible learning and flipped learning or the flipped classroom.\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Rotational \/ blended learning <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is a: \u201c\u2026model (that) allows students to rotate through stations on a fixed timetable, where at least one of the stations is an online learning station. This model is most commonly in\u00a0 primary schools because teachers are already familiar with rotating in centres and stations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The \u2018Flex blended learning&#8217;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 is included in types of Blended Learning and its model is one in which\u2026 \u201ca course or curriculum area\u00a0 in which <\/span><b>online learning <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is the backbone of pupil learning, even if it directs pupils to offline activities at times. Pupils\u00a0 move on an individually customized, <\/span><b>\ufb02uid<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> timetable among learning modalities. One teacher is on-site, and students learn mostly in their school classroom, except for any homework assignments. The teacher or other adults provide face-to-face support on a flexible and adaptive as-needed basis through activities such as small-group instruction, group projects, and individual tutoring.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Flipped Learning:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A flipped classroom is a type of blended learning where students are introduced to content at home and practice working through it at school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/public\/myexampleblogversion2\/uploads\/sites\/9784\/2020\/06\/04120438\/evaluate.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4671 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/public\/myexampleblogversion2\/uploads\/sites\/9784\/2020\/06\/04120438\/evaluate.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"691\" height=\"309\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/public\/myexampleblogversion2\/uploads\/sites\/9784\/2020\/06\/04120438\/evaluate.jpg 691w, https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/public\/myexampleblogversion2\/uploads\/sites\/9784\/2020\/06\/04120438\/evaluate-300x134.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 691px) 100vw, 691px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is important to understand the stages of Flipped learning and that activities that are accrued out at home are clearly and concisely linked to activities in the classroom.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We we think of Bloom\u2019s Revised Taxonomy might would immediately think of the\u00a0 the standard triangle with the remembering at the bottom and creativity at the top,<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Flipped Learning turns Bloom\u2019s Taxonomy on it\u2019s head:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/public\/myexampleblogversion2\/uploads\/sites\/9784\/2020\/06\/04120439\/blooms.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4672 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/public\/myexampleblogversion2\/uploads\/sites\/9784\/2020\/06\/04120439\/blooms.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"653\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/public\/myexampleblogversion2\/uploads\/sites\/9784\/2020\/06\/04120439\/blooms.jpg 653w, https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/public\/myexampleblogversion2\/uploads\/sites\/9784\/2020\/06\/04120439\/blooms-300x112.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 653px) 100vw, 653px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We need to think of our learners carrying out those low order thinking skills outside of the classroom in their work at home so that when we are in the classroom we can work on their high order thinking skills.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When we talk about \u201chome work\u201d we are talking about those activities that our learners can do it independently with if necessary and possible support from parents and carers. What format might these contain:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/public\/myexampleblogversion2\/uploads\/sites\/9784\/2020\/06\/04120440\/lots-and-hots.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4673 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/public\/myexampleblogversion2\/uploads\/sites\/9784\/2020\/06\/04120440\/lots-and-hots.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"661\" height=\"536\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We could add to those activities at home , simple worksheets, Kahoots, quizlets etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In our flipped classroom it is important to think of the activities that we are going to do:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The link between home and the classroom.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Our central Repository &#8211; Where will they be? Drive, Classroom, Teams, Onedrive Etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Classroom management: How will I manage the class at home and in the class: Will they be working collaboratively at home? Will\u00a0 I have differentiated groups or tasks? Will they work in pairs in the classroom?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Content: How will I create content for my classes? When it comes to video, will I create my own video material or will I look for appropriate ones online? How can I create activities that are attractive and engage my learners?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These are just some of the areas that need to be considered when carrying out flipped learning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So does it work? What are the benefits? Pupils can be learning at their own pace and with peers. Missed class or were ill. The class has online video material, so you can see what has taken place. Having done work prior to coming to class, learners prepared to contribute. It is a format which enriches Group work &amp; projects. As teachers we can target those learners\u00a0 who need help knowing that other learners can work in a more independent manner. A teacher instead of standing centre and at the front we are guiding our learners from the side \u201ccoaching\u201d them. This format\u00a0 benefits differentiation and work in small groups.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As we all know our learners do not come in a \u201cstandard format\u201d where one size fits all. As teachers and educators we all know that often certain approaches work well with certain learners.
