On a rather cold<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0but\u00a0<\/span>thankfully\u00a0<\/span>dry<\/span>, Wednesday<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>all<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>220\u00a0<\/span>of our S1 pupils were involved in an inter-disciplinary project which was part of the Nat<\/span>ional\u00a0<\/span>BBC\u00a0micro:bit\u00a0Model Rocket Car Challenge\u00a0<\/span>called Race for the Line.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Over 400 schools from all over the UK are participating in the competition.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>The inspiration<\/span>\u00a0behind the national project is<\/span>\u00a0the Bloodhound car which is attempting to beat the 1000mph world land speed record\u00a0and also\u00a0inspire the next generation of engineers to get involved in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.<\/span>\u00a0 #STEM<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In Design and Technology<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>classes leading up to the Race Day,\u00a0<\/span>pupils worked together in teams of 4\u00a0<\/span>to ma<\/span>ke a foam rocket car creating a design folio which showed how they had considered aerodynamics, friction etc.\u00a0 In Computing\u00a0classes\u00a0the pupils programmed the\u00a0Micro:bits\u00a0which were used to carry out the timing mechanism on the\u00a0race track\u00a0and in Science they explored the forces which would be applied to the cars.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On Race Day we were joined in school by a team from the Royal Navy who are based at Rosyth and are members of the crew of the new aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>The Navy team equipped each car with a solid fuel rocket and setup the\u00a0Race Track\u00a0in the playground.\u00a0 Each class took turns to race their cars and the times were recorded for each car.\u00a0 The Navy had brought along one of their PT instructors so to keep warm pupils carried out a fitness test with a couple of our S1\u2019s managing to reach the fitness standard for the Royal Navy while wearing their school shoes!!!\u00a0 After racing the\u00a0cars\u00a0the pupils then used our new Dual teaching space on the 3<\/span>rd<\/span>\u00a0floor to create some posters to summarise their learning in this project.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Some of these are now on display in the classrooms around the school.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The top 3 car teams\u00a0<\/span>went<\/span>\u00a0forward to the Regional Final\u00a0<\/span>on the 3<\/span>rd<\/span>\u00a0of May\u00a0<\/span>when they\u00a0<\/span>compete<\/span>d\u00a0<\/span>against all of the teams from other school in East Central Scotland @ th<\/span>e Royal Navy facility at Rosyth and 3 also qualified for the Scottish Final at the Barracks at Redford.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
