Tech for helping the planet. Tech She Can assembly recording.

Access an exciting Earth Day assembly recording from Tech She Can and explore how creative technology is solving problems and inventing useful tools to help the planet.

During this session recording, children will explore the role technology plays in helping us to protect our planet and fight climate change. They are also crucially introduced to a variety of green careers within tech that they could potentially pursue in the future.

You can access a recording from the session on 18.04.23 here.

This assembly is aimed at Second level learners but could still be enjoyed by younger and older learners with teacher support. There will be an open-ended and adaptable challenge activity at the end of the session.

This Is Data

You may have seen spreadsheet dashboards that react to use interactions, automatically filtering and updating charts and tables. Ever wondered how to do it? This short course will support you to develop you skills to store and process data using tools you already use.

These sessions will show you how to use tables, slicers, pivot tables and charts to bring your data to life. You will be able to use these skills to look at your own data and / or share these skills with pupils as part of their learning.

Sample data files will be provided.
Basic knowledge of excel will be useful.
This set of sessions will make use of Microsoft Excel.

Session 1 – Monday 13^th March 4pm

Preparing data for analysis – the importance of structuring data in tables, using slicers to filter data, conditional formatting, data validation, custom views and useful formulae

Session 2 – Monday 20^th March 4pm

Creating Visual Interactive Dashboards – using your data to create pivot tables and visualisations then bring them together into a single user dashboard

Session 3 – Monday 27^th March 4pm

Linking Data – how to link tables and visualise results that draw from more than one data source.

In this live lesson, for second level learners and above, we will send messages between two or more BBC micro:bits (this is possible with the simulator and with actual devices). To protect our messages, we will use some simple encryption to ensure that our messages cannot be intercepted and read anyone other than who we intend them to be read by.

Podcasts are a great way to share the learning journey taking place in school or at home. The beauty of podcasting is that it doesn’t need to be a face to face activity as they can be recorded remotely, edited easily and shared from any location.

Podcasts can easily become part of any learning activity. They can help staff and students reflect, review and reinforce their learning in a number of key areas. They also provide excellent opportunities for collaborative and cooperative learning approaches. Planning and producing a Podcast doesn’t need to take a lot of work but can be a excellent way to develop literacy skills in pupils. For staff, sharing a podcast can be an excellent way to showcase the excellent work taking place in your classroom, introduce new topics for learners, or cohost with like minded teachers looking to make an impact on student creativity.

Podcasting can be carried out with ease and little equipment. An iPad, a microphone, an app and an idea are all you need to get started with producing a series of informative podcasts that show that everyone truly can create.

02 March AM, PM and evening, NCSC Childminders in Scotland session and play-along for children (early level)

As childminders, you want to create a safe and secure environment for the children in your care. As we become ever more reliant on digital technology it is increasingly important that you protect data (on children, and families), finances and also the integrity of any digital systems you use, including email, communication channels and databases.

This webinar is for all childminders working in Scotland. It is run by the National Cyber Security Centre and supported by the Scottish Government, Education Scotland, Scottish Childminding Association and the Care Inspectorate, as part of Cyber Scotland Week. It will provide you with advice and steps you can take to minimise the likelihood and impact of a cyber attack, and information about where to get help and advice if you need it.

Join us to identify a handful of steps you can take to minimise the potentially costly and disruptive effect of a cyber incident, and better safeguard the children in your care, as well as your business’s finances and reputation.

Part of the 9.30am and 1.30pm sessions include a story ‘Monkey Cow’ by Stuart Spendlow and a hands on activity for children, focusing on creating secure passwords. To take part in the children’s activity, you will require some resources to hand:

• bag/box

• random household objects/ toys

• post it notes/small pieces of paper

• pens/pencils
