Maureen was very impressed and told the boys they had discovered the world\u2019s oldest pencil, called charcoal.\u00a0 People have been drawing and writing with charcoal since humans discovered how to make fire.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s quite messy!\u201d said Struan when he looked at this photo.\u00a0 \u201cLook at all the black on my face and Max\u2019s too!\u00a0 I had to wash it off before I went home!\u201d <\/p>\n She got them a very big bit of paper and they created this amazing charcoal drawing.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve drawn a bed and a man!\u201d said Struan.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ve drawn the sun!\u201d said Struan<\/p>\n Next week we are going to investigate how else we can use charcoal, looking at some of the ways artists through the ages have used it to create pictures.<\/p>\n From this experience Max and Struan learned that wood, when it is burned, turns into a different material. \u00a0They experienced some of the properties of charcoal.
