{"id":672,"date":"2016-04-29T08:30:30","date_gmt":"2016-04-29T08:30:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/milngavienursery\/?p=672"},"modified":"2016-04-29T08:30:30","modified_gmt":"2016-04-29T08:30:30","slug":"charcoal-discovered-in-our-garden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/milngavienursery\/2016\/04\/29\/charcoal-discovered-in-our-garden\/","title":{"rendered":"CHARCOAL DISCOVERED IN OUR GARDEN!!!!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the garden on Thursday, Struan and Max found the remnants of the fire from the gardening day last week!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/milngavienursery\/files\/2016\/04\/IMG_0607.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-673\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/milngavienursery\/files\/2016\/04\/IMG_0607-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0607\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Being bright, inquisitive boys, they picked up some of the burnt sticks and discovered that they were black and powdery.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u201cLook!\u201d said Struan \u201cYou can draw with this!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Maureen was very impressed and told the boys they had discovered the world\u2019s oldest pencil, called charcoal.\u00a0 People have been drawing and writing with charcoal since humans discovered how to make fire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s quite messy!\u201d said Struan when he looked at this photo.\u00a0 \u201cLook at all the black on my face and Max\u2019s too!\u00a0 I had to wash it off before I went home!\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/milngavienursery\/files\/2016\/04\/IMG_0616.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-674\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/milngavienursery\/files\/2016\/04\/IMG_0616-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0616\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She got them a very big bit of paper and they created this amazing charcoal drawing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/milngavienursery\/files\/2016\/04\/IMG_0617.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-675\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/milngavienursery\/files\/2016\/04\/IMG_0617-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0617\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve drawn a bed and a man!\u201d said Struan.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ve drawn the sun!\u201d said Struan<\/p>\n<p>Next week we are going to investigate how else we can use charcoal, looking at some of the ways artists through the ages have used it to create pictures.<\/p>\n<p>From this experience Max and Struan learned that wood, when it is burned, turns into a different material. \u00a0They experienced some of the properties of charcoal. They learned that people have used charcoal in the past to write and draw.\u00a0 They have learned it is messy and they also learned that it is good to be curious.\u00a0 All in all, a great morning\u2019s work!\u00a0 Well done boys!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the garden on Thursday, Struan and Max found the remnants of the fire from the gardening day last week!
