The Skills of Questioning

The main aim of chapter 5 in “Finding About Others: The Skill of Questioning” is to highlight the many different types of questions that can be used which  emphasis the importance of questioning. It also discusses certain ways in which a question can be asked to result in an accurate and satisfactory response.

There was several theories mentioned throughout the chapter, however the main ones I identified include; The importance of questioning, the types of questions and the impacts these questions can have.

A claim that stood out for me that Hargie makes was ‘It is the responses made to questions that determine whether or not the objective has been achieved.’ This conveys how vital questioning is to a childs cognitive development and ensure they are guided along a successful learning path.

A claim that I also agree with on types of questioning is ”open questions, while answered in more detail, tended to result in responses that deviated from the topic of the sentence. This highlights how it can be a simple habit of dulling your answer/ understanding of the question as it is easier to go off on a tangent. Whereas, proposing a closed questions gathers all understandings in a short and to the point statement. The impact of delivering a closed question highlights key areas of success and improvement, allowing you to know the correct and accurate amount of knowledge needed at whatever stage you may be at. Therefore, I believe closed questions are more effective.

The chapter also covered the concerns of pupils being possibly wrong when answering a question which results in a lack of questioning. I can understand this claim as it can easily knock someones confidence when being told wrong in front of a full class which can force the pupil to feel distressed.

This chapter has expanded my knowledge of questioning and highlighted how crucial it can be to an individuals learning.
