Dance

Reflections
I feel that we are able to build on this dance further as a group which can lead us into a possible routine. I feel that by physically being shown how easy it is to provide interdisciplinary learning into dance has made me feel more confident in linking different curricular areas. I think that through this session I have became more aware of the different ways we can use our skills in a creative setting and that there are many possibilities of doing the one move. Grainger states that as educators we ” need to extend our own experience of creative and artistic activity, and be willing to step inside such contexts with our learners, demonstrating our own imaginative engagement in the process. In this way perhaps we can regain our own creative confidence and enrich our creative competence as a profession.” This highlights how important it is as educators to embrace creativity and allow children to explore and express themselves. It is imperative to have a positive mind set when carrying out this type of activity.

Drama
Previous Experience
Drama Session
Within this session, as a class we created a mind map of the different words and feelings that are associated with drama. I was relieved to see that other people felt the same as myself by putting on the board words such:
It was good to see that there was a balance within the class and that we could all discuss our own unique experiences with drama.
Knowing this I do feel that I can carry the skills that I am learning through the course into placement however, right now I do not feel confident in carrying out a drama lesson within placement.
I feel that as a future professional that will be carrying out drama within the classroom it is very important to create my own environment, for the children to be able to learn my roles. Furthermore, the atmosphere that I will create will need to be appropriate to the age and stage of the children and give the children set rules e.g. don’t laugh, watch and respect performances, involve all children and give praise and encouragement. Through reflecting on my experience today it will be very important for me to know my class and the individuals within as they will all be unique and have different abilities. I do not want any child not to have the opportunity or confidence to try- I want each child to be able to take on their role being sure of themselves.
Reflections.
Since the session I now know that drama is flexible and can be taken anywhere! It doesn’t just have to be in the one place and is open to incorporating many aspects of the curriculum as well as sensitive issues. I found an article by Teresa Grainger very interesting in how I can use drama within my interdisciplinary learning that I will include a link here.
After doing some further reading on creativity in the classroom, it is apparent that creativity is becoming an essential part of children’s learning as it is apparent in our lives as adults. It is important to reflect on our practice in order to provide the best learning experiences to nurture children. (Craft, 2007)
