Drama

Throughout the session,  we looked at drama from a future teachers point of view, how we can use the children’s ideas through strategies such as hot spotting, improvisation, thought tunnel, forum theatre and process drama. These are different techniques that I can use in my future practise of drama to allow the experiences to be child lead and the children to really get into their roles.

A teacher in role enables children to experience situations from different perspectives as well as the teacher to cover a range of topics without having to plan each aspect of the subject as it becomes a child led experience. Teacher in role brings learners together and encourages them to be active participants in their learning. (O’Neill& Shin-Mei, 1998 p.27)

Art

As a class we received a lecture from a guest speaker from South Lanarkshire Council who showed us different pieces of work from the primary school children from P1 to P7. It was explained to us the topic behind the art work and the process how it was created. This was a valuable experience as it allowed us to see what type of expressive art they are doing in the local schools and how it is relating to the different curricular areas.

This was followed by a practical workshop, where we created our own picture using a variety of materials such as: pencils, water colours, fine liners, different size of papers, paints and different sizes of paintbrushes. This was a step by step activity where we didn’t really know our final creation- it was very teacher led however we were given the freedom to put our own touches on the creation.

Even though, we were all making the same picture e.g. a washing line, wall and background each and every outcome was different.

Visual stimuluses’ are important for children’s observation, recognition and interpretation skills.(Murphy, 2013).

I believe that this session was really important for looking at perspective. Each individuals view is different and it was emulated through this learning experience. It is important to be able to appreciate the work of others even if it is different to your own. Due to the nature of this activity it was evident that each piece of work would have similar aspects e.g. washing line, wall and background. However, no two would be the same and not one piece of work is ‘wrong’, this is a key point to highlight to children.

othersThe array of work produced by others.

In my future practice I will use this technique as it is an expressive activity which builds on many skills that are important on children’s development such as: communication, fine motor, hand eye-coordination and listening. This experience can be carried out with children of all levels making it a flexible, adaptable and creative activity,

I found this video very insightful when looking at perspective:
