{"id":202,"date":"2023-05-12T07:41:07","date_gmt":"2023-05-12T06:41:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/insidem11\/?p=202"},"modified":"2023-05-12T07:42:13","modified_gmt":"2023-05-12T06:42:13","slug":"peer-instruction-with-s3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/insidem11\/2023\/05\/12\/peer-instruction-with-s3\/","title":{"rendered":"Peer instruction with S3+"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.teachcomputing.org\/content\/images\/2022\/08\/TC_6285_GBIC-Headers_Peer-Instruction-1.png\" alt=\"Gender Balance in Computing: Using a peer instruction approach in the computing classroom\" width=\"349\" height=\"232\" \/>S3+ Computing Science pupils trialled &#8216;Peer Instruction&#8217; for the first time on Wednesday 3 May 2023.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On starting the Software Development unit, we have been using a &#8216;flipped learning&#8217; approach to the theory content of the course. This allows pupils to complete individual work such as reading and note-taking at home where they will be free from the distraction of their peers. It also means that we can maximise our time in class to complete practical tasks and develop higher order thinking skills.<\/p>\n<p>Initially, knowledge of the &#8216;homework&#8217; was tested via a multiple choice quiz completed at home. However, last week we trialled the &#8216;Peer Instruction&#8217; method in class. This follows the following format:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Pupils are shown a multiple choice question<\/li>\n<li>Pupils &#8216;vote&#8217; which of the options they think is the correct answer<\/li>\n<li>Pupils are shown the proportion of votes<\/li>\n<li>Pupils discuss their answers<\/li>\n<li>Pupils vote again<\/li>\n<li>The correct answer is revealed and a class discussion takes place to explain and highlight common misconceptions<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The digital learning tool &#8216;PearDeck&#8217; was used to facilitate this and allowed for a very interactive lesson.<\/p>\n<p>This approach encourages a &#8216;mistake-friendly&#8217; environment, in an attempt to promote a growth mindset.
