‘I loved painting the mural. The mural is happy because the children are outside and playing together. The mural is healthy because the family are sitting eating fruit and good food together. The mural is safe because the mum in the home is looking after the children and caring for them.’

Imagineer Keira

‘We made a manifesto. On it, it says tell children you’ve them and that school should be a joyful place.’

Imagineer Lucy

‘Here is our rap: this is not a black and white world, to be alive the colours must swirl. And we believe that maybe today, we will get to appreciate the beauty of grey. At least that’s what we say – let’s all go and play… and don’t be ashamed.’

Imagineers Mikey and Jamie

The Imagining Aberdeen mural is going to be very positive, colourful and happy and represent Tullos, Riverbank, Manor Park and Bramble Brae’s pupils’ future vision of Aberdeen. Cut-out seagulls will fly above the mural with things the Imagineers would change about Aberdeen.

‘The seagulls are going be going up above the mural. One side is white and the other black. On the black side will be bad things we don’t like about Aberdeen that we would change to make it a better place. Here is what we wrote on our seagulls:

  • ‘Bullying’ because enough people are getting bullied and we don’t want more people to be bullied.
  • ‘Not enough things to do when school isn’t on.’ There are lots of things for little people to do but not us. We would like a Transition Extreme in our area and more parks with bigger things like monkey bars, dens, tree-houses and tunnels in the ground so you can play games with maps, hide and have nerve battles.
  • ‘Houses are too small’ because there are loads of big families with 7 or 10 people living in them. Say you are going to have a two bedroom house for 7 people – that isn’t going to work.
  • ‘Broken glass’. Dogs and human can slip and cut themselves. We feel annoyed when we have to play near it.’

Mikey, Aidan, Demi and Malachy.

‘My favourite part of the mural is the house because you can be healthy, happy and safe there. People are having fun and watching TV. The family are at the table with fruit and vegetables. Everyone is together with their family.’

‘My favourite bit is the fun club because colours make me pop and it is very colourful and beautiful. It is really amazing. It looks nice to see and would look nice in Aberdeen for all kids. Kids can play with other people and get to know them there.’

‘My favourite bit is the same as Sean Paul. It is the part of mural which days ‘I believe people don’t have to ask for love’ because this is true and amazing.’

‘My favourite part of the mural is making my Imagineers because children are getting the chance to express themselves and say what they want to do when they are older.’

‘My favourite part of the mural is the school because the classes are having fun, working hard, playing, making art and doing maths.’

Miriam, Shannon, Lucy, Jamie and Dylan

Day 2 of Mural Week

20160524_114100 20160524_134716 20160524_130930 20160524_134820‘We have been making a mural and t-shirts with our names on the back. Painting us as Imagineers onto the board. We made slogans for adults. They said things like ‘Please pay attention to us’ as most adults go on their phones all the time, ‘Treat people with respect’ because we treat adults with respect and they should treat children the same. ‘Pick up your litter’ because Aberdeen won’t be a nice place if messy.’

Miriam, Sean-Paul and Aidan.

‘Our slogans said ‘Be more positive’ as some people like our teachers can be very negative. ‘I need care’ because some adults don’t care about their children. They can show they care by giving you what you need.’

Ben and Abdullah

Day 1 of Mural Week

‘Today we have started our mural. We have all week to complete it. We have been drawing buses, people, houses and dogs, imagining a better Aberdeen. It is nice being in a group of people and them being helpful to you and you helping them draw.’

Cody and Jamie

‘We are drawing ourselves as Imagineers on a landscape and then chalking out our sketches. I have been chalking slides coming out of a school and into a swimming pool. In my area the slides aren’t that good because people vandalise them. Making friends and meeting new people is my favourite thing about mural week.

Miriam and Ralfs

‘Being listened to gives us human dignity. My mum and my best friend listen to me. I’d like to draw them on the mural.’

Demi and Dylan

‘Being an Imagineer feels fun because you get to paint. Exciting because we’re going new places, meeting new children and painting a mural. Overwhelming but fun!’

Sean Paul, Tijana and Gabrielle
