The Glasgow Motivation & Wellbeing Profile (GMWP) is a 20 item questionnaire that explores motivation and senses of wellbeing in the learning context. It promotes learner participation and elicits children and young people’s views of themselves and their emotions. It gives an opportunity to reflect on their feelings and current experiences and encourages them to consider how to increase their own determination, motivation and sense of wellbeing.\u00a0 The GMWP tool has been recently highlighted in Education Scotland’s; Improving Attendance : Understanding the Issues publication, Nov 2023.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The GMWP was originally developed by Glasgow City Council’s Educational Psychology Service to support monitoring and tracking of the wellbeing of children and young people.\u00a0 It links with the self determination theory ( autonomy- a sense of self determination,\u00a0 affiliation- a sense of belonging\u00a0 and agency – a sense of\u00a0 belief in your ability to achieve your goals). It can support children and young people themselves to evaluate their own wellbeing in line with the principles of Getting it right for every child (GIRFEC).\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

GIRFEC is the methodology for ensuring that any practitioner helping children and their families work in a way that fully embraces the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). <\/span><\/span>GIRFEC requires every practitioner to apply a UNCRC approach in day to day practice by<\/span> putting children at the centre<\/span>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The GMWP tool can be used to monitor and track wellbeing overtime within individual establishments across all sectors.\u00a0 It can be applied with individual pupils, groups of children or young people, a whole class or whole school or sector, depending on the data analysis.\u00a0 It could also be used authority wide to highlight trends across the estate and enable staff to focus on authority wide intervention or prevention measures – for example work around attendance and engagement.<\/span><\/p>\n
