Update: 10 Aug 2024 mailchimp no longer lets new users add Classic Automation. As far as we understand this limits the rss to mail service to users who have used that service before. We are trying to find alternative suggestions.
Some sites may want to offer visitors the opportunity to get updates via email. for example a School Website may want parents to be able to signup to get the latest news.
There is not built in option to do this in Glow Blogs. You can use a third party service to provide this.
There are several service that do this. Most are paid. In the past we recommended Feedburner, this service was discontinued. We then suggested mailchimp. Unfortunately mailchimp no needs a paid account to work.
Any of these systems are outwith the control of Glow. The responsibility of privacy is between the subscriber and the service.
Example System
A new system follow.it badges itself as a feedburner alternative. This has a free option. It can be used with Glow Blogs with a couple of caveats.
- You cannot install the suggested plugin
- You cannot embed the form code.
As glow blogs limit how the service is used you cannot see any information about who subscribes to your blog.
To us with Glow blog you need to get the link give to followers.
- Create an account
- Go to the Publishers page
- From the side bar click on Offer New feed and choose RSS
- Use the Don’t use plugin link
- Scroll to the bottom of that page and click Done
- Copy the link on the next page.
You can also download a graphic to use as a link or add the link in the normal way. EG Follow Glow Blogs Help by e-mail.
Here we downloaded an image from follow.it and uploaded it. You could use an image of your own choosing.
Like Feedburner & Mailchimp in the past we have no control of how the service may develop or be discontinued.
Can anyone please point me in the right direction of the most up to date way of how to set up the blog so our families can be notified by email of when we add a new post? Thank you.
Hi Eva,
Glow Blogs does not have this feature built in. There are several service that will do this for you. A couple are mentioned above. We have instructions for using Feedburner:
https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/glowblogs/glowbloghelp/how-to/e-mail-subscriptions-for-glow-blogs/
Which might help.
Is there instructions on how to use mailchimp? I’m wanting parents to get notifications when there is a new blog post.
Hi Miss Skinner,
No we don’t have any. Mailchimp is a third party service. On this help site we have set up a mailchimp account. That people can subscribe to. The Mailchimp account is set to post email notification from this blog. On mailchimp I set up a campaign that checks the blog and sends emails to subscribers when there is a new post.
In Glow Blogs you cannot use the mailchimp form, so I’ve used a link which is in the right sidebar at the top.
We don’t have detailed instructions on how to use mailchimp as it is a 3rd party service outwith our control. It does change it feature set and interface occasionally. Mailchimp is very fully featured.
You do need to use the RSS feed for your blog. That is just the url of your blog with /feed/ after it.
Eg the feed for this blog is:
https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/glowblogs/glowbloghelp/feed/
I’ll drop you an email with this info too.
