Name Description
Blog feed The XML based file into which blog hosting software embeds a machine-readable version of a blog to allow it to be syndicated for distribution, often through RSS.
Blog publishing service

 

A software which is used to create the blog. For example WordPress,.

 

Blog site The location of a blog online, indicated by its URL. Not to be confused with blogsite below.
Blogsite A Web site that combines blog feeds from a number of different sources, including non-blog sources.
Blogger

 

Person who runs a blog.

 

Bloggies

 

One of the most popular blog awards.

 

Blogroll

 

A list of other blogs that a blogger might recommend by providing links to them (usually in a sidebar list).

 

Blogosphere

 

All blogs, or the blogging community.

 

Blurker 1. A reader of blogs that leaves no trace of their visits behind. (blog lurker) 2. A reader of blogs who has no blog of his or her own.
The BOBs

 

The largest international blog awards.

 

Bookmarklet A link directly to the new post function of blogging software. This link can be added to a browser toolbar to create a shortcut to posting.
Category Category and tags are often used synonymously. Though a category is usually the top level definition and a tag may be a more specific classification beneath that. For example a blog about Mathematics may have a category of calculations and a tag of subtraction.

 

Comments The opinions of your readers left in response to a blog post. This can be used to connect with your audience.

 

Comment spam

 

Like e-mail spam. Robot “spambots” flood a blog with advertising in the form of bogus comments.

 

CMS: Content Management System. Software that allows creation, publishing and management of a website’s content.

 

CSS

 

Cascading Style Sheets. Technology used by most websites to create visually engaging webpages, user interfaces for web applications, and user interfaces for many mobile applications.

 

Dooced To have lost a job because of entries posted to a blog.

 

Group blog A blog maintained by two or more bloggers.

 

Header This is the top part of your blog, appearing before any pages or posts. Headers generally include items such as logos, taglines, and navigation menus, which are meant to set the tone or theme of your blog.

 

Hyperlink

 

Used synonymously with the word “link”, this is clickable content within a web page that takes the user to another page, website, or within part of the same page.

 

HTML

 

Hypertext Markup Language, the language used to write web pages.

 

Meme An idea passed down from generation to generation. The cultural equivalent of a gene. Amongst bloggers, meme refers to an idea passed from one blog to another, cascading throughout the blogosphere.
Meta Description

 

A short description of that particular page or post. It’s an opportunity to place targeted content for your audience to see on the search results page. Typically this should be a couple of sentences using target keywords, phrased to cause a person to want to visit your site.

 

Photoblog

 

A blog mostly containing photos, posted constantly and chronologically.
Ping In the context of blogging, a ping is the alert in the TrackBack system that        notifies the original poster of a blog post when someone else writes an entry concerning the original post.

 

Plug in In WordPress, a plugin is a folder of files added to the blog in order to give it extra functionality or features.
Podcasting

 

Contraction of “iPod” and “broadcasting” (but not for iPods only). Posting audio and video material on a blog and its RSS feed, for digital players.

 

Post

 

A post is an article within a blog. A post can be on any topic, and it’s the collection of posts that form the basis of a blog.

 

RSS

 

Really Simple Syndication is a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines or podcasts.

 

RSS aggregator

 

Software or online service allowing a blogger to read an RSS feed, especially the latest posts on their favourite blogs. Also called a reader, or feed reader.

 

RSS feed The file containing a blog’s latest posts. It is read by an RSS aggregator/reader and shows at once when a blog has been updated. It may contain only the title of the post, the title plus the first few lines of a post, or the entire post.

 

Sidebar One or more columns generally found on the side of most blogs, usually containing a profile of the blogger, blogroll and other plug-ins.
Subscribe

 

Some blogging platforms have internal subscriptions, this allows readers to receive notification when there are new posts in a blog.

 

Tag A generic term for a language element descriptor, often used in blogs to identify the type or types of content that makes up a particular post.
Theme

 

CSS based code that when applied to the templates will result in visual element changes to the blog. The theme, as a whole, is also referred to as a blog design.

 

URL

 

Uniform Resource Locator. The address of a piece of information that can be found on the web such as a page, image or document.

 

Vlog

 

A video blog; a vlogger is a video blogger (e.g. someone whose blog contains filmed posts)

 

Weblog

 

The unshortened version of ‘blog’.

 

Widget or Module

 

Areas of your site that are designed to stand out and usually found in the side bars of your site. Within a CMS these are easily interchangeable sections that often provide links or other helpful resources.

 

XML Extensible Markup Language is a markup language that defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format which is both human-readable and machine-readable.
