Information about one approach: EMDR

Here is some information about one approach to addressing distress and promoting wellbeing. It is recommended that this intervention is supported by an Educational Psychologist. The information about this approach, set out below, is however useful in further developing an understanding of how distressful events affect all of us.

Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful scientifically proven psychotherapy to help people recover from traumatic events in their lives which have led to poor mental health.

EMDR can be adapted depending upon the specific needs and developmental stage of your child or adolescent. For example, pictures may be used instead of words or the therapist may write a story or narrative about the traumatic events to make the therapy more accessible to children who are struggling to talk about the trauma.
