Maisondieu Primary School (Angus): Opening horizons and challenging stereotypes through career education

Rising to the challenge set by the Career Education Standard 3-18, Maisondieu Primary School has woven career education and advice into their curriculum from early years to P7.   Working in partnership with parents and the wider community the school harnesses a range of resources and support to develop skills and career aspirations for the 21 century.  A working group, led by a parent-teacher partnership and local community partners, helped to promote the schools career education .  Many activities including a ‘World of Work Mobile Unit’ and two whole school careers events were arranged. These enable children and young people to actively engage with variety of employers to support learning and understand the skills required for  their future pathways.

The impact of this approach is  notable:

  • Pupils are able to connect their learning with the world of work;
  •  Selected representatives from local employers help challenge stereotypes and provide a more realistic picture of jobs and careers available for young people and the skills required to access these.
  • It also strengthened partnership links with stakeholders in the community.
  • It allowed pupils and staff to reflect upon the entitlements and expectations set out within the Career Education Standard 3-18

Agile Software Development opportunity with Industry

XP2016 in association with Skills Development Scotland Digital World are offering school students, P5 – P7 and S1 – S3, the exciting opportunity to take part in a free software development workshop at the International Conference on Agile Software Development in Edinburgh 24-27th May.  This is the first time the digital industry has given school students the chance to take part in an industry conference.

Invitation – Software Development Workshop (2)

Coderdojo coding clubs will be delivering the workshop, providing a fantastic opportunity for schools to get hands on with software development and for students to get an exciting taster of what a career in software development might involve.

The event is held in Edinburgh and the organisers will be making contribution to travel costs to help schools from further away take part.   Places are very limited and schools will be drawn from a hat to ensure fairness. Schools MUST REGISTER by Friday 22 April to be part of the draw.

Millport primary weekend1Overview of the course

This FREE CLPL opportunity (attendees must find make their own travel arrangements) is organised in partnership with the Field Studies Council and Education Scotland’s Social Studies team.

FSC Scotland delivers Primary, Environmental, Biology, Adventurous Activity and Geography courses for over 5000 students a year. This course builds on this expertise and aims to introduce participants to a range of different fieldwork activities which can be used with primary school students. The course is aimed at primary teachers and educators who want to further develop their skills to support and lead outdoor learning.

The weekend will cover risk assessments, planning fieldwork and organising Outdoor learning activities safely. Participants will receive a certificate of attendance.

During the course we will trial and evaluate a range of different activities which can be used to support and help structure a range of outdoor learning sessions. In particular we will consider how to structure ‘traditional’ observational fieldwork, investigations and sensory fieldwork aiming to more effectively engage students with the places they are studying and interacting with. We will also consider how effective formative assessment and technology can be incorporated into fieldwork.

Course objectives

By the end of the course participants will have:

  • Trialled different fieldwork activities, in a variety of environments, which can be used to explore Curriculum for Excellence, interdisciplinary learning and Learning for Sustainability through outdoor learning.
  • Considered different tasks to develop students’ thinking skills, help assess learning in the field and ideas which can be used in school grounds (including OPAL activities).
  • Carried out a risk assessment for an outdoor education activity, know the steps needed to carry out a risk assessment and have considered key ingredients of safe fieldwork practice.

Start and finish times

Resident visitors are requested to arrive on the first day of the course at the office reception before 5.30pm. Supper will be between 6pm and 7pm. An introductory talk will follow. Breakfast will be between 7.45-8.45am. The course will end on 2pm on the last day.

The standard of accomodation will be in basic dormitories but each participant will have a single room.

Fife as a Global Community

The Kingdom Shopping Centre, Glenrothes recently hosted a school event run by St Andrew’s University. Exhibitions of local primary school pupils’ work was on display and the pupils involved were there to discuss the projects that they had been working on, to the public.

Each school has been learning about a different local or global project throughout the current school year. Examples include Mary’s Meals, Children’s Rights, Conflict in Syria, Local Conflict, Socio-economic study of African countries and the tragic loss of Malyasian Airlines Flight served as a prompt for pupils to create their own Carribean Island. The pupils had all been working hard to either run their own Enterprise activities or create Artwork, Stories, Crafts, Music, Drama and Technology to raise money and awareness for their project and associated charities.

The schools all set up stalls and were approached by members of the local community to share what they had learned. All of the pupils were extremely confident in talking to the public and they all showed a great enthusiasm for their topic. They were clearly proud of the work that they had produced and were interested to see what each other had done. Overall, it was a fantastic event and is held annually. Well done to all of the pupils involved!

Loch Lomond: Social Studies Skills Day

Education Scotland has teamed up with Loch Lomond National Park to offer two days for Primary practitioners, to help improve confidence using Social Studies Skills in the outdoors.

The first of these days will take place on the 16th of May. The day will start with a visit to the LLNO centre at Balmaha, then a trip to the island of Inchcailloch. On the island there will be opportunity to take two walks with the Park rangers to find out about what the park can offer for learners but also to improve skills for working with learners in the outdoors.    

The day is for primary teachers only and there are 14 free places. A packed lunch will also be provided free of charge, but participants will need to make their own travel arrangements to and from Loch Lomond National Park.

The second day on the 20th of June will be booked separately and will involve visits to ‎Luss and Lomond Shores to look at some History and Geography in the area.

Topical science and partnerships

BF2A9145Following the publication of its 3-18 Curriculum Impact Report for Sciences in September 2012, Education Scotland organised a series of conversation days, where priorities for action to secure improvements in science education nationally were identified.

Key aspects for development emerged, which included:

In the primary sector and at the early stages of secondary school, there is generally less emphasis in the key area of Topical Science than on the other four organisers……. In these cases, children and young people do not have enough opportunity to discuss and debate a range of ethical issues.”

Young people are increasingly surrounded by scientific issues in the media and their everyday lives. By considering current issues through topical science, learners increasingly develop their understanding of scientific concepts and their capacity to form informed social, moral and ethical views. They reflect upon and critically evaluate media portrayal of scientific findings.

To address this aspect the Sciences team are hosting a Glow Meet entitled “Topical Science and Partnerships” which will be complimented again by a series of professional learning twilight sessions.

Contexts for delivering topical science and methods for planning topical science will be addressed.

Social Studies and Digital Technologies Day

This is an excellent CLPL opportunity to refresh and learn new approaches to integrating ICT and Technologies through Social Studies.
There will be three exciting keynote speakers in the morning, followed by an afternoon session with a choice of three interactive workshops.
A complete programme for the day and the opportunity to book a place will be published in early February.

Japan Webpage Contest

This contest is open to any UK school that is teaching Japanese or doing any kind of project related to Japan. Your school does not need to be teaching Japanese to enter the contest.

To enter the contest, all you need to do is make a simple webpage about the work that your school is doing with Japanese or Japan. This could be a blog, a wiki, or a page that’s part of your school’s website.

Your webpage could feature:

  • A project with your Japanese partner school

  • A report on your school’s Japan Day
  • Japanese or Japan-related resources that you have made to help your students
  • Japanese language work made by students
  • Other Japan-related work by students, e.g. from geography, history, art, sports, music, intercultural understanding, cross-curricular lessons
  • Students’ experiences of learning Japanese or about Japan
  • An overview of Japanese at your school

All entries to the contest will be featured on the website. You will also have your chance to vote for your favourite shortlisted entries, in the online voting poll.

Scottish Engineering Awards- Special Leaders Award 2014/15

lf you could be an engineer in Scotland – what would you do?

The Leaders Award for STEM is a Primary Engineer programme open to students from 5 to 19 years old. It is a fantastic way to increase their awareness of the breadth of opportunities open to them within STEM subjects. Students  have the chance to speak directly to professionals from different fields in STEM. This award is a great opportunity to engage pupils with real engineers who will convey the importance of STEM in their daily working lives. Schools will be able to develop relationships with industry, both local and worldwide, giving pupils a unique perspective of professions and their significance in the wider world.

The Challenge
Pupils are asked to research engineering and interview a practicing engineer to interpret the statement “lf you could be an engineer in Scotland – what would you do?”. Primary pupils are asked to illustrate their response, accompanied by 100 words. Secondary pupils are asked to illustrate their response, accompanied by 350 words.

The website contains resources and lesson plans which can help pupils get their research underway. Just visit the ‘Downloads’ section of the website at www.leadersaward.com.

All successful participants will receive a certificate and winning entries will be exhibited to the public at the Barony Hall, University of Strathclyde (date TBC).

Web development with CoderDojo

CoderDojo is a global movement inspiring young people to get involved in coding. At a CoderDojo you learn how to develop websites, build apps, design games and more. CoderDojo makes development and learning to code a fun, sociable, kick ass experience. This workshop covers the history of the world wide web, and how it is fast becoming the most exciting platform for digital making. The workshop will give participants the chance to learn about coding for the web, and build their own digital creation using the latest web technologies including HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript.

This workshop is suitable for those with a little experience of using a computer.

Creating, Editing and Sharing Content on the iPad

The iPad’s not just for capturing content; it’s an editing suite and means of sharing on the move. This session will give you a taster in photography, film-making, animation and audio, as well as manipulating, editing and sharing.  While you can share this content with the world, more importantly you’ll leave equipped to share your knowledge with your class!

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners.

Scratch

Scratch is designed especially for ages 8 and over but is used by people of all ages. With Scratch, you can program your own interactive stories, games, and animations and share your creations with others in the online community. This workshop will focus on the importance of computational thinking and how to deliver these within the Curriculum for Excellence for upper primary school classes. The workshop will first look at the background issues followed by an extended hands-on session using MIT’s free Scratch software – an entertaining and engaging graphical programming environment for learners.

This workshop is suitable for those with a little experience of using a computer.

Kodu 

Kodu is a visual programming language from Microsoft specifically designed for the creation of games.  It can be used to teach creativity, problem solving, storytelling, as well as programming. This workshop will introduce you to the different Kodu tools that allow you to build engaging 3D worlds in which to situate your game, as well as learning to code the different objects in the world. The workshop will be very much hands on and you will make a range of worlds/games that will develop your confidence to take Kodu into the classroom.  You will also be able to use the materials provided in class and how to deliver these within the CfE.

This workshop is suitable for those with a little experience of using a computer.
