Scottish Youth Film Festival

Scottish Youth FestivalHe Named Me Malala has been picked as the opening film of the first ever Scottish Youth Film Festival. The programme, which is released today, also features popular local comic book caper Electric Man, as well as a packed programme of short films by young people including animation, live action and documentary.

The festival takes place for the first time on November 20th – 22nd in Armadale, West Lothian, and features short films made by young people from across Scotland as well as workshops, talks, events, special screenings and an Awards Ceremony. Armadale writer Lisa Ballantyne and Sunshine on Leith actor Kevin Guthrie were announced recently as patrons of the festival, and will be in attendance at the opening event.

Guthrie said:

“I’m really delighted to support the Scottish Youth Film Festival. I think it is a wonderful opportunity for a younger generation to be able to present and express themselves with stories. Film in particular allows very specific stories to be told in an artistic and creative way which taps into the emotional depth of young people. I am really looking forward to attending the festival and seeing what stories the young people come up with.”

Festival organisers Scott Mackay and David Barras hope that the festival will bring young Scottish creators together with other industry professionals and are partnering with organisations such as the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, GMAC and Edinburgh International Film Festival, who will be in attendance at the weekend offering help and advice to interested youngsters.

The festival is funded by Big Lottery Fund’s Young Start Fund. A Big Lottery Fund spokesperson said:

“We are delighted to support the Scottish Youth Film Festival with our Young Start funds. Young people across Scotland will have the chance to come together and get involved in a range of creative workshops and activities the festival has to offer. It is great to hear Scottish actor Kevin Guthrie has been announced as a new Patron of the inaugural festival. We wish those involved all the very best for a successful event.”

The festival will take place in Armadale on Nov 20th – 22nd. Tickets to all screenings and workshops are free but limited. Go to syff.scot to book your tickets now.
