Development Officers for Sciences and Technologies, along with the team at ES, are working on a new context which will soon be added to the STEM Central resource. The Bioengineering context will feature learning journeys for sciences and technologies, based on third and fourth level E&Os, including learning, teaching and assessment ideas. Stop by STEM Central for quality assured resources, bringing relevant, engaging and exciting Scottish contexts into the classroom.
The past 6 months or so has seen the team from the Consolarium working within Early Years and Early Primary settings in Dundee, West Lothian and Argyll & Bute in order to explore the educational potential of a piece of software called The Land of Me. Nicola Nielsen, Development Officer for Sciences attended a session last week with new STEM ambassador contract holders for Scotland. A chance to showcase the new web based resource STEM Central and to explore the underpinnings of CfE. The STEM ambassador scheme is a tremendously valuable scheme for Scottish schools, and we are delighted to support their work in helping them connect with learners even more effectively.
Glow Cookbooks are real life examples of how practitioners have used Glow to support learning and teaching. This latest Glow Cookbook on Technologies describes how a Business Studies and Computing teacher used Glow to support a unit of work on Cyber-Bullying in their S1 classes.

Education Scotland colleagues attended the Aberdeen Primary Science Summer School this week to meet primary practitioners eager to enhance their understanding of learning and teaching in sciences. This gave us a chance to link STEM Central contexts, videos and interactives to practical workshops, in partnership with Satrosphere, Dundee Science Centre and the University of Dundee. We also highlighted new Education Scotland resources to engage learners and support practitioners including Glow Sciences video resources and Weather & Climate Change. STEM Central is about enriching learning and teaching through relevant engineering contexts and about strengthening links with industry and employers, and partners in education, so we were delighted to be given the opportunity to participate in this event. I recently was invited to the Food for Thought Community Cafe at St. Nicholas Primary School in Broxburn, West Lothian.
Food for Thought is a Fair-Trade community café run by the pupils of St. Nicholas Primary School. At Food for Thought you can share a tea or coffee and some delicious home baking over a chat while learning more about Fair-Trade and how it helps countries in the developing world. You can also buy Fair-Trade goods and find out more about the pupil’s learning in school. From time to time they may provide entertainment or run workshops for you to get involved in. At Food For Thought their aim is to provide a happy atmosphere and a strong sense of community.
Food for Thought was dreamt up by the pupils while they were working on a block of learning about Global Citizenship. It is a Social Enterprise venture and profits will support their sister school in Ghana and local community groups supported by the St. Vincent de Paul.

The materials in this Glow Group cover 15 different units which promote the teaching and learning of engineering in the secondary school curriculum.
Engineering the Future is a 3-year project funded by a major grant from the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) which is running from October 2006 to early 2010. It involves staff from the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering in the University of Strathclyde and from the Departments of Electronics and Electrical Engineering and of Educational Studies in the University of Glasgow and science teachers in some 20 secondary schools in 9 education authorities in Scotland and in 2 independent schools. The financial support afforded to the project by EPSRC is gratefully acknowledged as are the advice and encouragement provided by EPSRC and by the Universities of Strathclyde and of Glasgow.
