‘Creative Pathways Finder’ – offering an insight into vast careers opportunities in the industry

The ‘Creative Pathways’ brochure developed by Dundee Creative pathways brochureCity provides  anyone interested in working in the creative industries sector with all the information required to consider the wide variety of jobs  that exist within it.

Dundee, and Scotland as a whole,  have an exciting and ever growing cultural economy.   To continue to build on our reputation as an innovative and entrepreneurial nation, it is important that our young people are equipped with the correct skills and knowledge to thrive  and succeed, in order to grow and sustain Scotland’s economic future.

The aims of the Creative Pathways brochure are to:

• Highlight career pathways within the city and the importance of the role that creative industries will have in Dundee’s future.

• Provide an insight into specific career roles.

• Assist pupils with subject choices, sign-posting them in a creative direction.

• Increase teachers’ knowledge of the creative employment opportunities available for their pupils.

• Highlight what ‘creativity skills’ are.

• Raise awareness of the skills employers are looking for.

• Encourage creative people to remain in the city.

This resource has been informed by national strategies such as: Developing the Young Workforce Scotland’s Youth Employment Strategy,   A Time to Shine: Scotland’s Youth Arts Strategy, A Curriculum for Excellence and Scotland’s Creative Learning Plan.

As the creative sector in our city continues to expand many new opportunities will emerge for  young people to follow a creative pathway.

Skills Development Scotland: Extended career services offer

Skills Development Scotland (SDS) is expanding its careers sJ Russell Head of CEServices in schools from June 2016, Head of Career Management Skills Development and Delivery James Russell tells us more.

“I can still remember the best piece of advice I was offered while I was at school – be the best you can be and do what will make you happy.

The advice came from my sister who was a maths teacher.

She supported me throughout school not just in her subject, but also in developing study skills and what I now understand to be the fundamental principles of a learning or continuous improvement cycle.

Her support had a huge impact on me, helping me to develop my knowledge, skills and confidence.

It challenged my thinking on what motivated me and what I wanted to do with my life.

It’s more than 20 years since my sister said those words to me, but my experience reflects how good careers advice can open young people’s eyes to the opportunities and possibilities of their future.

The work of SDS careers advisers is having a similar long-lasting impact on young people across Scotland day-in and day-out.

Now, I’m lucky enough to be part of the team at SDS working to extend the reach of our careers services in schools to offer further support for younger pupils, their teachers and parents.

This expansion will allow us to reach younger pupils, especially at big transition points such as choosing subjects, or at the move from primary to secondary school.

It will help ensure the choices they make about their future are informed, and based on their skills, interests and abilities alone.

What to expect

SDS In-School Infographics AW2June marks the start of the new offer being available across the country.  The extended elements of the offer will see Careers Advisers:

  • hold group sessions at primary 7 transition or early in S1 to support individuals during this key transition phase; and with pupils in S2 and S3, aligned with arrangements for making subject choices
  • offer one-to-one interviews with pupils at subject choices time and offer their parent/ carer and/or teacher to be involved during this one-to-one or at another suitable time
  • working closely with schools to identify and agree the delivery of enhanced support to develop career management skills (CMS) to those S3 pupils who need it most, on a one-to-one basis. Follow-up group activity can also be held as agreed

That’s in addition to what’s already in secondary schools which sees SDS advisers:

  • hold group sessions during the senior phase (S4-S6) using interactive activities to continue to develop pupils’ CMS
  • offer one-to-one coaching for those pupils in the senior phase who need it most to support their decision making and progression
  • hold drop-in clinics for all young people from S1-S6
  • be available at parents’ events

Testing is also continuing on our new career education tools and resources for primary 5 to 7 teachers and pupils, which will be available in August.

These will be accessed through our award-winning career information and advice web service, My World of Work, which also has specific advice and support for parents and carers.

Tried and tested

The changes support delivery of the Career Education Standard and the outcomes of Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce, as well as complementing a wide range of other SDS projects such as Foundation Apprenticeships and Improving Gender Balance Scotland.

Annual discussions between SDS and individual secondary schools on the SDS School Partnership Agreement are underway. These discussions enable us to collaborate on how we align and integrate SDS services to compliment the curriculum activities already in place to develop pupils’ knowledge of the world of work and career pathways.

The partnership agreements ensure we can shape how SDS resources are best used to match each school’s strengths, needs and local circumstances.

35 schools in 12 local authorities worked with us across the 2015/16 academic year to be ‘early demonstrators’ for the extended offer. This has enabled us to evaluate the service offer in practice and develop it further in advance its introduction in all other schools across the 2016/17 academic year.

Young people, teachers and SDS staff were an integral part of the process of developing the Career Education Standard and our expanded careers services offer; our work with them will continue to help us understand how we can improve the service further.

We’ve also developed CLPL modules for teachers along with Education Scotland. The first, an introduction and overview of the Career Education Standard, is already online. Three more will be added soon on Career Management Skills, labour market information and My World of Work.

We all want young people to be able to go on to successful and fulfilling careers, and I look forward to the part SDS can play in supporting them to get there.”

Stonewall Scotland Education Conference 2016

This one-day event will bring together teachers, education professionals and communities from across Scotland  to discuss tackling homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying and celebrating difference through a series of interactive workshops, keynote speeches and panel discussions.

The annual Education Conference will take place at the Hilton Grosvenor, Edinburgh on Friday 3 June.

The CDN Emporium 2016: Inspiring Ideas will take place 01 to 17 June, offering a fortnight of thought-provoking and practical workshops, seminars and activities at our offices in Scotland and in colleges across Scotland.

This year the CDN Emporium will explore ‘Developing the Workforce’ as a theme, focusing firmly on the current needs and challenges facing colleges.

The Emporium creates opportunities to:

  • share inspiring practices and success stories from Colleges, Employers and Students
  • lead and discuss inspiring ideas that shape a transforming workforce development agenda.

This document aims to support care staff working collaboratively with education staff to support children and young people with their learning in the care setting. It recognises that care staff are already supporting children and young people’s learning in care, and aims to provide them with practical examples which will assist services to further improve learning outcomes for children and young people across care and education. The examples of learning experiences which follow are organised in the 3 key curriculum areas which are the responsibility of all: literacy, numeracy and health and wellbeing.

Fly The Flag For Human Rights

New campaign to promote the benefits of human rights.

The Scottish Government’s #FlyTheFlag for human rights campaign is part of a contribution to the objectives of Scotland’s National Action Plan for Human Rights, where evidence demonstrates that people are insufficiently aware of their rights and do not feel empowered to claim their rights.

New research carried out by You Gov has shown that one in five Scots believe that human rights are for minority groups only. This new campaign is designed to help people better understand how human rights are relevant, used on a day to day basis and how they help build a fairer and more progressive society.

SCQF Learner Survey

The SCQF Partnership is currently undertaking research to evaluate how the SCQF is being used by learners across all areas of education including school, college, university, CLD and those currently in employment. We would like to establish the level of knowledge of the SCQF and how it is being used by learners to make decisions on their learning and plan their learning pathways. We would also like to establish if there have been any changes in the levels of awareness and understanding of the SCQF since we last conducted this research in 2013.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is the leading known preventable cause of permanent learning disability worldwide and is caused by maternal use of alcohol during pregnancy. Affected children can have a wide range of physical, growth and neurobehavioural problems which impact on their everyday lives and limit their independence.  Often teachers are the first professional to notice a child has difficulties.

As part of a programme of events over the last 4 years, the Scottish Government has arranged a free event for nursery and primary school teachers. The event’s keynote speaker is Dr Ana Hanlon-Dearman – a Developmental Paediatrician from the Manitoba FASD Centre in Canada. The Scottish Government has worked closely with Dr Hanlon-Dearman in moving FASD forward in Scotland. Dr Hanlon-Dearman has a wealth of experience working with schools in Manitoba, and will be discussing their work supporting children and young people, as well as tools that have proved successful.

Invitation to evaluate ‘Recognising and Realising Children’s Rights’ resource

Recognising and Realising Children’s Rights is a professional development resource which was developed by Education Scotland and launched in September 2013. The stated aims of this resource are to:

  • raise awareness and develop knowledge/understanding of the UNCRC;
  • individuals and establishments to self-evaluate their practice in light of the UNCRC;
  • support improvement planning within establishments;
  • support children to know, understand and claim their rights.

Education Scotland would like to engage colleagues in evaluating the effectiveness and impact of this resource, and would appreciate your contribution to this evaluation.

The findings will be used to evaluate the current resource and to inform future developments. It should only take a few minutes to complete and all contributions will remain anonymous.
