Field of Enquiry 2000m2

Whitmuir Farm invite you to join their field-of-enquiry-picField of Enquiry team to explore the food system through the 2000m2 lens. That is, when you divide all the arable land on our planet by the people, we each have 2000m2.

Over 10 Saturdays, topic by topic, they will examine the current state of affairs, make sense of the pressures on our sytem and as enquirer, we will frame questions we should ask scientists, farmers and politicians to answer if we are to do things differently.

The dates for the FREE sessions are as follows;

Saturday 8th October, 22nd October, 5th November, 19th November, 3rd December, 14th January, 28th January, 11th February, 25th February, 11th March

There is no obligation to attend all sessions.

Supporting Men’s Sheds

There are Men’s Sheds in 22 regions across Scotland  – there could be one near you. A men’s shed is a meeting place where men come together and take part in a variety of mutually agreed activities. Lots of learning,  rediscovering former skills, picking up new ones  and camaraderie.

If your school is  updating technical equipment perhaps you would be able  to  gift older items to your local Men’s Shed.  It’s a recycle/ re-use story.  Actions like this promote inter-generational activities and lifelong learning.

How to get involved with National Coding Week

Children are part of a confident “Digital Generation” having grown up with the internet, smart phones and coding classes. However, many adults have missed out on the digital revolution and feel left behind.

“The aim of National Coding Week is to give adults the opportunity to learn some digital skills”.

Children can inspire adults

Children are learning digital skills in school or through coding clubs such as Code Clubs and CoderDojos. We therefore would like these clubs to open their doors to parents for a one-off session in which the children will teach the adults some of the skills they have learnt.

Libraries can act as focal points

Libraries are in an ideal position to act as a focal point and can host a coding session. Either the staff can lead the session or someone who is confident and familiar with coding from the local community can share their skills. Schools can get involved

Children are learning coding but many parents don’t understand what their children are doing and many non-specialist teachers and governors feel they have missed out on these skills.

Web, app, creative and digital businesses can throw open their doors

Those with the expertise can share their skills and have fun teaching people the basics of coding. There are many training organisations who offer courses throughout the year. They can contribute to the week by offering taster sessions to encourage people to sign-up.

Tech Hubs

There are hundreds of tech hubs with amazing businesses working from them. The tech hubs are giving start-ups a platform from which to launch businesses and inspire others. These can be the perfect venue for the week and we would love them to be involved.

Advice:

1) Keep it simple — it might simply by showing people resources available on the Technologies Professional Learning Community  in Glow, Code.org or Barefoot Computing

2) If you are able to organise it, get a friendly local web development agency, ICT teacher or FE college tutor to lead the session.

Scottish Education Awards 2016: ‘Enterprise and Employability’ winners

Here are the winners and finalists for this years Scottish Education Awards in the category ‘Enterprise and Employability across Learning’:

Early Years and Primary

  • Winner:  Ferguslie Pre-Five Centre 
  • Finalists:   Bonhill Primary School and Cargenbridge Primary School

Secondary

  • Winner:  Braeview Academy    
  • Finalists:  Ellon Academy and Linwood High School

Here is a brief description of the schools’  achievements:

Ferguslie Pre-Five Centre, Renfrewshire

PWP_2897One example of the ways in which Ferguslie Pre- five Centre in Paisley has taught enterprise to its children is through creative play. The centre’s pupils were asked to build a “dog house” using large blocks. They researched the design of the dog house using iPads but couldn’t find a way to get the triangular roof to stay up. The children asked the local high school pupils if they could help them out with their design problem. They used Google Earth to plot their route to the high school and then one of the children led their peers and staff to the high school using their map.  The high school built the roof for the children, who voted on which colour it should be painted. They continue to use the dog house in their creative play.  Other inspirational initiatives include a community café co-run by the children for the wider community, managing a community plot project, growing and selling food, running their own newspaper, making and selling craft items in the café etc. .

Bonhill Primary School, West Dunbartonshire

Bonhill Primary School in West Dunbartonshire has been awarded three Social Enterprise Awards. One was given for its Bonhill Buds project, which sells home-grown produce to the community; one for its Malawi Rice Challenge, through which rice is sold to help farmers in Malawi and develop the school’s Fairtrade philosophy; and one for 2nd Time Around, the school’s recycled uniform shop, which supports families within its community and generates revenue to fund a weekly dance class and parent café. The school plans to apply for a fourth award for its Hens Project, through which it sells eggs to support the local community. The school’s enterprise company has also developed its own  tartan.

Cargenbridge Primary School, Dumfries and Galloway

To teach pupils about enterprise, Cargenbridge Primary School near Dumfries has teamed up with DuPont Teijin Films, a manufacturer of polyester film that employs around 230 people at its site in Dumfries. Over the past four years, the factory has worked with the school to celebrate World Quality Day. Each class is set a challenge to produce quality work by using creativity and problem solving such as creating an outfit from recycled material, including polyester film. This year’s focus was on food and health and included staff from DuPont Teijin working with pupils to teach them about the “plan, do, review” strategy, which is a transferable skill that can be applied across the curriculum

Braeview Academy, Dundee

At Braeview Academy in Dundee, developing skills for employment is embedded into the curriculum. Careers education includes each department delivering presentations on the pathways available through their subject, while local business people visit the school to talk about their areas of work. Braeview is also an early demonstrator school for Skills Development Scotland’s enhanced offer. The school has links with Dundee & Angus College which delivers cosmetology lessons in the school’s hairdressing salon, employability skills for S4 and S5, mechanics lessons and construction and motor vehicle maintenance lessons for S3 pupils identified as requiring additional support and motivation.

Ellon Academy, Aberdeenshire

Ellon Academy in Aberdeenshire took part in the compilation of the Wood Report and was recognised by one of its authors, Alison MacLachlan, for being “excellent in improving outcomes for pupils in relation to enterprise and employability skills”. Every pupil undertakes annual enterprise and employability-focused enrichment programmes, which are delivered by mixed-faculty teams and partner employers. S6 pupils complete a Be All You Can Be day with the RAF, inspirational speakers and other partners while S5 classes engage in a Business Challenge Day with 25 advisors from industry at the University of Aberdeen as students for the day, and all S4 pupils undertake work experience.

Lindwood High School, Renfrewshire

Renfrewshire’s Linwood High School introduced a “whole school employability programme” following an audit in 2013. The programme develops each pupils’ skills from S1 through to S6 and includes a focus on local careers and the chance to work with local business partners. Pupils develop skills such as communication and teamwork through inter-disciplinary learning projects, which include raising money for charities. These achievements are recorded in the My Merit system, which then feeds into each pupils’ application forms and CV during their senior years at school. Linwood also works with Skills Development Scotland and takes pupils on visits to the science centre at the West College Scotland and the University of the West of Scotland.

SHOWCASING PLAY – PRACTICAL LEARNING, FUNDING AND BEST PRACTICE

We thought we’d let you know of an event hosted by Inspiring Scotland and Children in Need and supported by Jeely Piece to look at lots of different ways to facilitate play.

The event is designed to showcase the raft of playful activities that can be delivered for disadvantaged children and young people across Scotland, playful opportunities that require little or no equipment, and that can be utilised in family’s homes, in their communities and in schools. Play can make a massive difference in the lives of children and young people and not just at an early age. This event will demonstrate how play activities can be delivered in different ways with all age groups.

The event will also look at how funding is available to charitable organisations to kick start and support playful opportunities that enhance the lives of Scotland’s children and young people.

The event is practical and will be both indoors and outdoors, so please come dressed appropriately for the weather on the day and wear outdoor shoes.

During the day workshops will be on offer:
o Inclusive Play – Capability Scotland
o Play Rangers and Street Play – Possibilities for Each and Every Kid
o Active Play – Agile, Healthy Valleys and Jeely Piece Club
o Risky Play – Play Scotland and Care Commission

Community Empowerment (Scotland) Act Register your interest for SCDC’s consultation on participation requests

Scottish Community Development Centre ( SCDC)  is inviting anyone from community groups and networks, and people working with communities, to give their views on participation requests. The legislation on participation requests provides a process for communities to request to work alongside public sector bodies to improve outcomes, and sets out duties on how public service authorities deal with such requests.

SCDC will be running a series of focus groups followed by an online survey (later in spring) to gather your views.

Understanding Glasgow

GCPH new report, Glasgow: health in a changing city looks in detail at how health and life expectancy are changing in Glasgow and each of its 56 neighbourhoods, and the links to the changes over the last 20 years to the city’s population, housing, environmental and socioeconomic circumstances.

Understanding Glasgow sets out to describe life circumstances and health in the city. Here you will find key indicators, showing trends and comparisons within the city and with other cities.

 

 

 

Community in Action in Castlemilk

Learners from a Castlemilk adult learning group, The Only Way is Up, celebrated the completion of the first SCQF level 4 accredited course based on Counting on a Greener Scotland (COGS)  at Whitelee Wind farm.   They are pictured with   Heather Reid who presented their certificates and WEA tutor Alison McLachlan.    Learners evaluated the pilot course resources and their  feedback will inform future provision.

The Only Way is Up  is supported by the WEA, Ardenglen Housing Association, Clyde College and South Area Literacies Partnership. Education Scotland funded the development and design of the original numeracy educational  pack Counting on a Greener Scotland  which was developed by WEA with Heather Reid. Counting on a Greener Scotland  focuses on weather, climate change and energy.

Generations Working Together launches Recognition Awards 2016
The awards celebrate and recognise the outstanding talent, commitment and inspirational involvement of workers, volunteers and groups who promote Intergenerational activities. This year there are six categories:

  1. New intergenerational project (Less than 12months)
  2. Established intergenerational project (Greater than 1 year)
  3. Yvonne Coull, Local Network Coordinators Award
  4. Young person contributing to intergenerational work
  5.  Older person contributing to intergenerational work
  6. Building successful partnerships through intergenerational work
