It opens the door to the enjoyment of other human rights, greater freedoms, and global citizenship. Literacy is a foundation for people to acquire broader knowledge, skills, values, attitudes, and behaviours to foster a culture of lasting peace based on respect for equality and non-discrimination, the rule of law, solidarity, justice, diversity, and tolerance and to build harmonious relations with oneself, other people and the planet.\u202fDespite progress, at least\u202f739 million\u202fyouth and adults worldwide still lack basic literacy skills in 2024.\u202fAt the same time,\u202f4 in 10 children are not reaching minimum proficiency in reading,\u202fand\u202f272 million children and adolescents were out of school in 2023.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This year, International Literacy Day (ILD) marks its 60th anniversary<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. It was proclaimed by UNESCO in 1966 during the 14th session of the General Conference. Celebrated under the theme\u202f\u201c<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u201d\u202fILD 2026 provides an opportunity to take stock of progress, deepen understanding of persistent and emerging challenges, and shape future literacy agendas in a rapidly changing world.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/articles\/international-literacy-day-global-celebration-and-literacy-prizes-2026-award-ceremony?hub=66710\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">global celebration\u202fwill be convened by UNESCO on\u202f8-9 September 2026 in Mexico<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, in collaboration with the Government of Mexico.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cAs we celebrate the 60th anniversary of International Literacy Day, we reaffirm literacy as a fundamental human \u202fright \u202fand \u202fa \u202fpowerful \u202fforce \u202ffor \u202ftransforming \u202flives, \u202feconomies and societies.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span Highland Council have been celebrating community based adult learning, which includes adult literacy. They have been showcasing community based adult learning across the Highlands, the history all the way to the present day \u2013 an incredible history to learn from and a celebration of the fantastic work taking place across the area. They have produced an online version which\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/the-story-of-adult-learning.shorthandstories.com\/the-story-of-adult-learning\/\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">you can read here by clicking on this link.<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Approximately one in four adults in Scotland experience challenges with literacy.<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">According to the Literacy Trust, in Scotland,\u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">around 26.7% of adults<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fface challenges due to limited literacy skills, which can affect their confidence, employability, and ability to navigate daily life \u2013\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/ck\/a?!&amp;&amp;p=6bfd1a17dc70f2b6ca25bb6fc7dcfa2fa46140321b711386acb662818dceb840JmltdHM9MTc4ODkxMjAwMA&amp;ptn=3&amp;ver=2&amp;hsh=4&amp;fclid=05eb9db7-6055-6a3d-076c-8a0561aa6bce&amp;psq=adult+literacy+in+scotland&amp;u=a1aHR0cHM6Ly9saXRlcmFjeXRydXN0Lm9yZy51ay9wYXJlbnRzLWFuZC1mYW1pbGllcy9hZHVsdC1saXRlcmFjeS8&amp;ntb=1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">literacytrust.org.uk<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The OECD Survey of Adult Skills (PIACC) 2024 \u2013 found that across participating member countries adults living in the most deprived areas are more likely to have lower literacy skills, highlighting the link between social inequality and literacy outcomes.
