Delivering support for\u00a0<\/span>learning for<\/span>\u00a0the wide range of needs in your setting can be<\/span>\u00a0daunting\u00a0<\/span>\u2013 but you\u00a0<\/span>don\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0have to do it alone.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n

Latest figures from the Scottish Government, (<\/span>Pupil and Teacher Characteristics, 2025<\/span><\/a>)\u00a0suggest\u00a0approx\u00a043% of pupils in mainstream schools in Scotland\u00a0have a\u00a0recognised\u00a0additional\u00a0support need \u2013 a statistic that has been on an upward trajectory\u00a0since 2009.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Further data, pulled from the <\/span>Pupil Census<\/span><\/a> (Scottish Government, 2025),\u00a0 identified class teachers were once again the primary source of support in both primary and secondary school settings. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But teachers, education,\u00a0support\u00a0and early years staff are not expected to deliver this alone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Enquire is the Scottish national advice service for\u00a0<\/span>additional<\/span>\u00a0support for learning and offe<\/span>r a range of information, top\u00a0<\/span>tips<\/span> and practical resources to help raise awareness and build <\/span>confidence<\/span>\u00a0and capacity to deliver support for learning to a growing pupil population with wide and varied\u00a0<\/span>additional<\/span>\u00a0support needs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The right to support<\/strong><\/p>\n

First,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0important to understand the entitlement to support as outlined in law.\u00a0The Education (Additional Support for Learning) (Scotland) Act 2004, sometimes referred to as the ASL Act, defines\u00a0additional\u00a0support needs being present if a child or young person, for\u00a0<\/span>whatever reason,<\/span><\/i>\u00a0is unable to\u00a0benefit\u00a0from school education without\u00a0additional\u00a0support.\u00a0It highlights the right for children at school or nursery to get the support they need – regardless of\u00a0if\u00a0they\u00a0have any kind of formal\u00a0diagnosis.<\/span><\/p>\n

This definition also makes space for reasons that do not come with a medical diagnosis, such as poverty or circumstance as well as when support is needed in direct response to a life event, such as bereavement.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u00a0a range of\u00a0protections and rights also related to education outlined in the UNCRC (Incorporation) (Scotland) Act 2024, and further rights for disabled learners in the Equality Act 2010.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
