For the last 5 months we have been working with Mrs Kirk’s S4 class from Shawlands Academy, Glasgow, on a Booked! project called Graphic Lyrics. The class’ journey began in August, when they travelled through to Edinburgh International Book Festival for a Stanley Odd performance, as part of our Schools Programme, their first experience of Graphic Lyrics.
The pupils then worked with Dave Hook from the band to first choose a traditional story from their own culture or another (the pupils in the class are Romanian, Slovakian, Czech or Iraqi), put their own slant on the tale, write rhyming lyrics, and then record them as raps. Dave and his bandmate Samson then worked alongside the pupils to put their recordings to beats. You can listen to the raps below.
The stories are:
Dracula by Isac, Zuzanna, Viktoria, Marek and Michaela
Pinocchio by Sara, Adrian, Tomas and Pavol
Popoluska by Iman, Maha, Martina, Rebecca, Iveta and Adrian
Beauty and the Beast by Tabita, Naomi, Dana, Abel, Marta and Adrian
Working with Graphic Novelists Metaphrog, the pupils then adapted their stories into comics, breaking down and illustrating the action.
You can read the full Graphic Lyrics Comic here.
The project was not without challenges for the pupils, but they have been involved in every aspect of the production of the comic and tracks and we hope they are very proud of what they have achieved.
