{"id":17654,"date":"2018-11-15T18:51:23","date_gmt":"2018-11-15T18:51:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/eslb\/?p=17654"},"modified":"2018-11-15T18:51:23","modified_gmt":"2018-11-15T18:51:23","slug":"scottish-borders-teacher-industry-insight-placements","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/dyw20\/2018\/11\/15\/scottish-borders-teacher-industry-insight-placements\/","title":{"rendered":"Scottish Borders &#8211; Teacher  Industry Insight Placements"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Scottish Borders Council provided 55 teachers with the opportunity to\u00a0find out first hand\u00a0the skills required in\u00a0 local \u00a0industries. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Sarah Rowson- Teacher of Modern languages\u00a0from Berwickshire High School shares her experiences<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Before the end of the summer term 2018 I spent two days with Rabbie&#8217;s Trail Burners as part of my Teacher Industry Insight Placement organised by Developing the Young Workforce Borders .<\/p>\n<p>I spent one day in the Edinburgh headquarters being introduced to employees across the various departments and hearing about their roles in the organisation.\u00a0 This was highly informative and helped me understand the structure and functions within the company.<\/p>\n<p>The second day I spent on a day tour of the \u201cWest Highlands, Lochs and Castles\u201d to give me a taste of Rabbie\u2019s business from a customer\u2019s viewpoint.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, I have built on this link with Elaine Brannan, Head of HR, who is going well beyond the call of duty for my pupils.\u00a0 I am running the SQA Languages for Life and Work Award this session, which includes an Employability unit.\u00a0 Elaine has been in to Berwickshire High School to meet my pupils and has committed to coming back on several occasions to help them identify their transferable skills, create CVs and work on their interview skills.\u00a0 She has also offered work experience to a small number.\u00a0 Taking part in all these activities &#8211; and especially being interviewed and given constructive feedback \u2013 will be enormously beneficial for my pupils.\u00a0 Elaine\u2019s first visit last week was met with enormous enthusiasm, the most I have seen from this group for anything work-related!<\/p>\n<p>My background is business-related (before I became a teacher) and both my experience and that of all the business contacts we have forged are really bringing home to the pupils the importance of identifying the transferable skills that they already have and developing them still further.\u00a0 In this class our focus is not really the academic, but rather developing these young people in preparation to join the workforce in due course.\u00a0 The placement I had with Rabbies has been invaluable here.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scottish Borders Council provided 55 teachers with the opportunity to\u00a0find out first hand\u00a0the skills required in\u00a0 local \u00a0industries.
