{"id":16871,"date":"2017-08-28T18:19:19","date_gmt":"2017-08-28T17:19:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/eslb\/?p=16871"},"modified":"2017-08-28T18:19:19","modified_gmt":"2017-08-28T17:19:19","slug":"st-marys-primary-school-north-ayrshire-work-based-learning-opportunities-through-community-partnerships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/dyw20\/2017\/08\/28\/st-marys-primary-school-north-ayrshire-work-based-learning-opportunities-through-community-partnerships\/","title":{"rendered":"St Mary\u2019s Primary School (North Ayrshire):  Work-based learning opportunities through community partnerships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>St Mary&#8217;s Primary School, finalist at the Scottish Education Awards 2017, has developed a systematic approach to career education weaving work-based learning opportunities across the curriculum.\u00a0 This includes\u00a0an assisted work placement programme for\u00a0all P7 students\u00a0with local\u00a0business across a wide range of sectors from science and technology, IT and\u00a0the hospitality sector.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The programme\u00a0is now running in its second year.\u00a0 \u00a0Headteacher Mary Hume says:\u00a0 &#8220;We have built excellent relationships within the town evidenced by the fact that they are willing to work with our pupils again this year but moreover, we have been able to diversify and offer more choice to our pupils.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One of their partnerships allows pupils to shadow interpreters at Concentrix (IBM) dealing with complex issues of cyber security on a global scale.\u00a0 The partnership also extends to staff visiting the school to supporting the 1+2 languages agenda at St Mary&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>This initiative sits within the wider career education programme the school offers all learners across the curriculum.\u00a0 Parents and employers are co-designing and delivering exciting project work that enhances learners&#8217; skills for learning, life and work. \u00a0 From Nursery to P7 they are invited in to present workshops to the children on skills for work as related to their own jobs and at the child&#8217;s level. Children now have an awareness that learning is lifelong and they have to take responsibility for their own developments.\u00a0 Both children and parents value the skills which are being developed in partnership with them and the community.
