{"id":16793,"date":"2017-08-01T13:25:11","date_gmt":"2017-08-01T12:25:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/eslb\/?p=16793"},"modified":"2017-08-01T13:25:11","modified_gmt":"2017-08-01T12:25:11","slug":"outdoor-education-helps-to-develop-essential-employability-skills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/dyw20\/2017\/08\/01\/outdoor-education-helps-to-develop-essential-employability-skills\/","title":{"rendered":"Developing essential employability skills through outdoor education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>E<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/eslb\/files\/2017\/02\/Alness-Academy-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-16224 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/eslb\/files\/2017\/02\/Alness-Academy-1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>xposing young people to the outdoors and engaging them in activities that challenge and inspire them has long been highlighted as an important component to support the development of skills for learning, life and work.\u00a0 Resilience , team building, problem-solving as well as acquiring technical skills\u00a0 all help when it come to preparing for the world of work.<\/p>\n<p>This has been highlighted by the recent visit of Jamie Hepburn, Scottish Minister for Employability and Training,\u00a0 to The Outward Bound Trust\u2019s Loch Eil Centre to see for himself how the trust works with young people to help them develop skills which enable them to become workplace-ready.\u00a0\u00a0 In his interview to<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scotsman.com\/news\/opinion\/building-confidence-and-resilience-a-worthwhile-addition-to-workplace-skills-1-4497523#comments-area\"> the Scotsman <\/a>(7 July) he said: \u201cIt was fantastic to see The <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/eslb\/2017\/02\/21\/dyw-interesting-practice-exemplar-outward-bound-supporting-young-people-on-the-future-pathways\/\">Outward Bound Trust\u2019s work <\/a>helping young people build their skills and confidence while enjoying the outdoors. This kind of practical training is benefitting Scotland\u2019s workforce and enabling our economy to grow and flourish. That is why we are investing in 30,000 modern apprenticeship starts per year by 2020 and are increasing the number of graduate level and foundation apprenticeships.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The trust has recently placed even more emphasis on the transition from education to the workplace and to tailoring our offerings to respond to the Developing the Young Workforce agenda.
