Busby Primary School:  Skills development at the core of the curriculum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/eslb\/files\/2017\/03\/Busbypic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-16425 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/eslb\/files\/2017\/03\/Busbypic-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"254\" height=\"143\" \/><\/a>Busby Primary School (East Renfrewshire) has developed a highly dynamic initiative that\u00a0focuses on\u00a0enhancing skills \u00a0for learning, life and work from early years to P7.\u00a0 Based on a masterclass concept, headteacher Sharon Hunter has\u00a0inspired the <strong>Skills Academy, <\/strong>a programme that brings\u00a0together staff, employers, parents and\u00a0community organisations to provide inspirational, progressive learning experiences for all children and young people.\u00a0\u00a0 The timetabled programme is built around five cross-cutting themes which learners access on a rotational basis:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Food Technology<\/li>\n<li>Community,<\/li>\n<li>Design &amp; Manufacture<\/li>\n<li>Creativity<\/li>\n<li>Life skills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Throughout the academy programme pupils collaborate with each other across Early, First and Second Levels.\u00a0 Its successful implementation is based on\u00a0the strategic planning and support provided by the school\u2019s leadership team, enabling all staff to engage\u00a0according to their\u00a0interests through relevant CLPL opportunities.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/yMMh_UWVxvw\">Clip 1:\u00a0 Head Teacher\u00a0perspective &#8211; overview<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/yMMh_UWVxvw\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-16435\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/eslb\/files\/2017\/03\/Busby-PS-SA-clip-300x170.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"170\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Learners excel in skills development<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As a result learners are progressively developing a employability and career management skills throughout their primary education.\u00a0 The programme\u00a0offers a wide range of\u00a0contextualised learning experiences as varied\u00a0as hosting an art exhibition, creating an\u00a0outdoor learning space (eg.\u00a0building a stage and planting a scented garden), working with a professional film maker\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/er\/Busby\/master-classes\/design-and-manufacture\/\">designing apps.<\/a>\u00a0 First hand experience in the catering industry has resulted in learners collaboratively catering for large audiences (eg. <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/er\/Busby\/events-and-excursions\/burns-supper\/\">Burns Supper<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Leaners are fully aware of the skills they develop through the academy programme,\u00a0 how these relate to\u00a0world of work and the value these hold for their future pathways.<\/p>\n<p>The following document contains an overview of the Skills Academy programme: <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/eslb\/files\/2017\/03\/Interesting-Practice-in-Skills-DYW-Busby-PS.docx\">Interesting Practice in Skills DYW &#8211;
