Engineering Video Games and Beyond<\/p>\n

Abertay University in Dundee is home to the UK\u2019s first national Centre for Excellence in computer games education and houses the biggest Sony Playstation development lab in Europe. IESIS and partners are pleased to bring to school students this series of talks and illustrations about careers in software engineering and games development from three of the University\u2019s leading experts. They will cover how games are made and how computer games technology is increasingly being used in other areas, such as Hollywood movies, medical research and environmental planning. Among other projects Abertay\u2019s experts have applied the technology to the pre \u2010<\/span>production work on last year\u2019s blockbuster <\/span>Dawn of the Planet of <\/span><\/span><\/i>the Apes, and are also using it to speed up the testing of anti<\/span>\u2010<\/span>cancer drugs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jim Bown is Professor of Systems Biology and played a key role in developing Abertay\u2019s mathematical modelling and bioinformatics research centre. Jim will show examples of computer interactive visualisation <\/span><\/span><\/span>applied to assisting <\/span><\/span>science and engineering including design of urban environments and development of anti \u2010<\/span><\/span>cancer drug combinations. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Dr Natalie Coull teaches Abertay\u2019s Masters degree in Ethical Hacking and Computer Security and her research covers improving computer security for children by bridging the gap between their knowledge of technology and their lack of awareness of cybersecurity. Natalie will discuss recent cyber attacks <\/span><\/span><\/span>including the \u201cSony Hack\u201d and the \u201cAdobe <\/span><\/span>password leak\u201d and the lessons that can be learned from them.<\/p>\n

Matt Bett is a lecturer in games engineering<\/span><\/span><\/span>, teaches Abertay\u2019s computer<\/span><\/span>games courses, researches virtual reality and has spent recent years developing new ways of controlling \u201cvirtual cameras\u201d. His work with Fox Studios on a film \u2010<\/span><\/span>making tool based on his virtual camera technology, which <\/span><\/span>was used on the hugely successful Hollywood blockbuster Dawn of the Planet <\/span><\/span><\/i>of the Apes has created world<\/span><\/span>\u2010<\/span><\/span>wide interest.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
