These skills are also reinforced, used and&nbsp;assessed all over the school.&nbsp;\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Curriculum:\u00a0<\/strong>classwork is based round class texts, exploring themes and\u00a0issues explored within novels, stories, plays, poetry, film etc. Pupils\u00a0respond to these through writing, reading, listening and talking activities.\u00a0\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each class also visits the library once a week &amp; pupils are expected to read\u00a0at home for an hour per week in a bid to achieve their Bronze Reading Award. Grammar, spelling, knowledge about language activities\u00a0and close reading are another important aspect of our S1 curriculum.\u00a0\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Assessment:\u00a0<\/strong>pupils are formatively assessed in all skills\u00a0during the course of\u00a0lessons. Written and talk outcomes are assessed with cover sheets and\u00a0pupils are expected to reflect on their progress, complete improvements\u00a0and set targets.\u00a0\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Homework:\u00a0<\/strong>S1 &amp; 2 learning at home activities are posted on Satchel 1. The key learning at home activity is reading: all pupils have a reading log that should be signed at home each week. Pupils may also be asked to finish\u00a0longer pieces of written work, read chapters of class texts, complete skills\u00a0or grammar activities, do short research tasks, listen or watch short texts,\u00a0redraft writing, prepare or rehearse solo talks etc.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In S1 and S2, pupils will learn about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Formal letters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Autobiographies and personal writing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Listening skills <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Talking skills: solo talks and group discussions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Critical essays (prose \/ drama)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Imaginative writing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discursive writing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spelling, homophones, punctuation &amp; vocabulary<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">S3<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>S3 English develops the skills practised in primary &amp; S1-2, whilst also preparing pupils for the increased challenges of Senior Phase courses in S4. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In S3, pupils will continue to learn about the skills above, as well as working more independently and beginning to work more under exam conditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In most cases, learners will complete National 3 or 4 tasks to bridge the BGE and Senior Phase curriculum. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Useful Links<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>S1 and S2 In English, pupils develop skills in reading, writing, talking &amp; listening,&nbsp;continuing from primary school.
