Modern Studies engages young people to develop a greater understanding of the world today and their place in it. \u00a0Students will have opportunities to develop important attitudes such as respect for the values, beliefs and cultures of others; openness to new thinking and ideas; and a sense of responsibility and global citizenship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Course Outline<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n In the National course, there are three key areas of focus: <\/p>\n\n\n\n Democracy in the UK<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n There has never been a more crucial time to have a well-informed knowledge on the British political system and in class you will explore how Parliament works. What do politicians really do? You will also learn the ways in which political parties’ campaign for election and participate in your own whole-school mock election campaign. We will also examine voting behavior to find out who votes for what political party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Crime and the Law<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n This is a fascinating topic that covers the nature, extent, and causes of crime. The topic also analyses the impact of crime on individuals and society. The role of individuals, the police, legal system, and the state in tackling crime is also investigated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Terrorism<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n Terrorist attacks are a prominent topic within society today. This is due to the frequency of such attacks. In class, you will investigate recent events and research the reasons behind such attacks against humanity.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n Assessment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n National 5 Modern Studies<\/strong>: There is a formal exam at the end of this course which will take place in one sitting. The time allocation is 2 hours and 20 minutes<\/strong>. Pupils will be assessed on all three units covered and the exam is marked out of 80. <\/strong>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is also an externally assessed\u00a0\u2018Added Value\u2019 Assignmen<\/strong>t to\u00a0complete at\u00a0National 5<\/strong>\u00a0and this is worth\u00a020 marks\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013\u00a020%\u00a0<\/strong>of the\u00a0overall grade.\u00a0\u200b This project will be completed between January and March. This is to\u00a0be submitted to the\u00a0SQA by Easter 2024.<\/strong>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is no external exam for\u00a0National 4<\/strong>, but internally marked\u00a0assessments and \u2018Added Value\u2019 Assignment to complete.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Course Outline<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The Higher Modern Studies course is comprised of three units. These are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Social Issues in the UK<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n We will look at:<\/p>\n\n\n\n 2. Democracy in Scotland and the UK<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n We will look at:<\/p>\n\n\n\n 3. World Power: USA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n We will look at:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Higher Modern Studies<\/strong>: There is a formal exam at the end of this course which will take place over two sittings on the same day. The time allocation is 1 hour <\/strong>and 45 minutes <\/strong>for Paper 1 <\/strong>and 1 hour and 15 minutes <\/strong>for Paper 2. <\/strong>Paper 1 is essay based, and Paper 2 focusses on source-handling skills. Paper 1<\/strong> accounts for 52 marks <\/strong>and Paper 2 <\/strong>is marked out of 28.<\/strong>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n Pupils will also complete an externally assessed \u2018Added <\/strong>Value\u2019 Assignment<\/strong>.
