Assessing learners’ understanding

  • Challenge and Enjoyment
  • Progression
  • Depth
  • Personalization and Choice

A young person’s progress should be assessed in ways and at times appropriate to that
person’s learning needs. Judgements made about this learning should be based on evidence
from a broad range of sources, both in and out of school, and by reference to a learner’s
progress over time, across a range of activities

> choosing assessment methods that are fit for purpose
> evaluating evidence and assessing progress in learning
> recording and reporting on learning using evidence
> planning next steps

Learners need timely, accurate feedback about what they have learned and how much and how
well they learned it. This helps to identify what they need to do next

Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction states that learning should begin with a daily review of prior learning as this can strengthen the connections of the material previously learned. This might be vocabulary, processes or concepts. By revisiting them, educators can correct misonceptions or have them recalled and the learners primed for that day’s learning.
