This can be any form of media, including video, photos, text or games. Creating content carries less risk than consuming or communicating as long as the content remains on the device &#8211; the biggest risks coming when <strong>created content<\/strong> is shared via <strong>communication<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Ofcom data (2022) shows that the number of children and young people creating online video content is actually a small number and decreasing as this content becomes &#8216;more professionalised&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a id=\"ttfmake-1666278184\" class=\"ttfmake-button\" style=\"background-color: #171717; background-repeat: no-repeat;background-position: center center;\">\n<h3 class=\"builder-banner-section-title\">\n\t\tInternet safety risks and considerations\t<\/h3>\n<div class=\"builder-section-content\">\n<div class=\"ttfmp-accordion-container\" data-height-style=\"\"  data-start-collapsed=\"true\">\n<div id=\"ttfmp-panels-item-title-panels-item_105\" class=\"ttfmp-panels-item-title\">\n\tAccess<\/div>\n<div id=\"ttfmp-panels-item-content-panels-item_105\" class=\"ttfmp-panels-item-content\">\n<p>In order to <strong>create<\/strong> online content and potentially inappropriate or harmful content, learners usually need access to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a <strong>device <\/strong><em>(internet access is not necessarily required for creating media content)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><b>apps\u00a0<\/b>to create the content, such as the device&#8217;s camera and editing or manipulation apps<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When supporting learners with this area, it is important to consider <strong>who controls their access<\/strong> to these opportunities and resources:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is there a risk of this occurring in school?<\/li>\n<li>How is that enabled?<\/li>\n<li>Are there steps that could be taken to reduce the risk of this?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If it is an out-of-school risk:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How can the school support with this?<\/li>\n<li>Is support required for families or learners?<\/li>\n<li>Who can support with this: Community Learning and Development or Police Scotland?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"ttfmp-panels-item-title-panels-item_116\" class=\"ttfmp-panels-item-title\">\n\tPotential risks<\/div>\n<div id=\"ttfmp-panels-item-content-panels-item_116\" class=\"ttfmp-panels-item-content\">\n<p>Being more cyber resilient reduces the risk of internet safety issues arising. We all want the internet to be a more welcoming space for children and young people and that is why we promote this positive message of safe, smart and kind.<\/p>\n<p>Topics to explore with learners might include are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the types of content they might <strong>create<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>the risk in creating or <strong>sharing<\/strong>?<\/li>\n<li>the risk of creating and sharing content to them or might it <strong>harm others<\/strong>?<\/li>\n<li>the potential risks, and associated harms, the same for everyone &#8211; why are they different, and why does this matter?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"builder-section-panels_160\" class=\"builder-section-prev-panels builder-section builder-section-panels builder-section-next-text accordion-mode\" style=\"background-size: cover; background-repeat: no-repeat;background-position: center center;\">\n<h3 class=\"builder-banner-section-title\">\n\t\tCyber resilience guidance\t<\/h3>\n<div class=\"builder-section-content\">\n<div class=\"ttfmp-accordion-container\" data-height-style=\"\"  data-start-collapsed=\"true\">\n<div id=\"ttfmp-panels-item-title-panels-item_161\" class=\"ttfmp-panels-item-title\">\n\tDevices<\/div>\n<div id=\"ttfmp-panels-item-content-panels-item_161\" class=\"ttfmp-panels-item-content\">\n<p>The first potential vulnerability when creating content is the device not being securely setup.<\/p>\n<p>Check with learners that they have taken these steps to reduce the risk of content being stolen from their device:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>their device account (Windows, iOS or android) has a strong password (three random words)<\/li>\n<li>makes use of 2-factor authentication (2FA)<\/li>\n<li>additional security features, such as fingerprints or facial recognition<\/li>\n<li>has a unique account for each user (if shared device, such as a tablet or laptop)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>a <em>screenlock <\/em>that requires a passcode or biometric (face or fingerprint) to log in to stop <strong>unauthorised access (hacking)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>the latest operating system<\/em> (usually iOS, android or Windows) installed as this usually fixes <strong>potential security vulnerabilities<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>installed apps from approved providers, such as <em style=\"font-size: 1.8rem\">App Store<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 1.8rem\"> or <\/span><em style=\"font-size: 1.8rem\">Play Store<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 1.8rem\"> to avoid <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1.8rem\"><\/strong><strong>potentially malicious apps that allow content to be stolen through a &#8216;backdoor&#8217;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.8rem\">Learners should also consider where created content is stored &#8211; this will typically be on the device but can also be stored on cloud storage, such as OneDrive, iCloud or Drive, and this adds the risk of remote hacking and content theft<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>apple devices have a<em>\u00a0content filter<\/em>, called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-gb\/HT212850\">communication safety in Messages,<\/a>\u00a0in their \u2018screen time\u2019 settings that blocks\u00a0<strong>potentially nude content sent or\u00a0<\/strong><b>received<\/b>\u00a0on children\u2019s phones<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"ttfmp-panels-item-title-panels-item_162\" class=\"ttfmp-panels-item-title\">\n\tAccounts<\/div>\n<div id=\"ttfmp-panels-item-content-panels-item_162\" class=\"ttfmp-panels-item-content\">\n<p>Another potential vulnerability when creating content is the accounts on the device or online platform not being secure enough and allowing others to access created content.<\/p>\n<p>Check with learners that they have taken these steps on their <b>apps<\/b> to reduce the risk of content being stolen from their accounts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>they use a secure, perhaps separate, <strong>email account<\/strong> (with its own unique username, secure password and 2FA)<\/li>\n<li>they use their device security, such as <strong>account and biometrics<\/strong>, to log in to apps as this means they need to have <strong>the device in-hand to access the account<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>they <strong>do not share access<\/strong> to their account with anyone<\/li>\n<li>they know how to use the settings and security features to set the platform up to <strong>only share information they are willing to share<\/strong> &#8211; this might include turning off data or location tracking, for example<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"ttfmp-panels-item-title-panels-item_114\" class=\"ttfmp-panels-item-title\">\n\tReport and support<\/div>\n<div id=\"ttfmp-panels-item-content-panels-item_114\" class=\"ttfmp-panels-item-content\">\n<p>When using devices or online platforms to create content, learners should understand that online platforms and services, including apps, carry <strong>greater risk of being shared without permission<\/strong>\u00a0as the content created on these is almost always <strong>stored on their server,<\/strong> which is the company&#8217;s computer, and not the child or young person&#8217;s device.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Should created content ever be shared with, or without, permission then learners should have the knowledge, skills and support to report and recover from the potential risks associated with this:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anyone under the age of 18 is considered a child by law and ANY content that contains exploitative or indecent images or video of children is child sexual abuse and illegal.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Educators should follow Local Authority child protection procedures. Children and young people who experience this should report it to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ceop.police.uk\/safety-centre\/\">CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection)<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is not illegal to film or photograph someone without consent, however, <strong>any exploitative or indecent images or video of children is child sexual abuse and illegal.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Educators should follow Local Authority child protection procedures. Children and young people who experience this should report it to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ceop.police.uk\/safety-centre\/\">CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection)<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Digital content that may have been created consensually but once consent is revoked it can be challenging to stop the other party sharing it.
