Take their concerns seriously, remain calm, and consider what they would like to happen.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/respectme.org.uk\/adults\/online-bullying\/\">Respect Me<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This guidance aims to support teachers educate learners about the control they have over devices and accounts and how this knowledge can reduce contact, block unwanted communication or report abusive behaviour.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"builder-section-panels_138\" class=\"builder-section-prev-text builder-section builder-section-panels builder-section-next-panels accordion-mode\" style=\"background-size: cover; background-repeat: no-repeat;background-position: center center;\">\n<h3 class=\"builder-banner-section-title\">\n\t\tInternet safety risks and considerations\t<\/h3>\n<div class=\"builder-section-content\">\n<div class=\"ttfmp-accordion-container\" data-height-style=\"\"  data-start-collapsed=\"true\">\n<div id=\"ttfmp-panels-item-title-panels-item_146\" class=\"ttfmp-panels-item-title\">\n\tAccess<\/div>\n<div id=\"ttfmp-panels-item-content-panels-item_146\" class=\"ttfmp-panels-item-content\">\n<p>In order to\u00a0<b>communicate with others\u00a0<\/b>online, learners usually need access to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>an\u00a0<strong>internet-enabled device<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><b>apps\u00a0<\/b>to communicate \u2013 this may include the device\u2019s own messaging, calls or video calls (FaceTime) apps, as well as the most common additional messaging apps\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hwb.gov.wales\/keeping-safe-online\/in-the-know\/whatsapp\/\">WhatsApp<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hwb.gov.wales\/keeping-safe-online\/in-the-know\/snapchat\/\">Snapchat<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>someone else<\/strong>\u00a0to communicate with<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When supporting learners with this area, it is important to consider\u00a0<strong>who controls their access<\/strong>\u00a0to these opportunities and resources:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is there a risk of this occurring in school?<\/li>\n<li>How is that enabled?<\/li>\n<li>Are there steps that could be taken to reduce the risk of this?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If it is an out-of-school risk:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How can the school support with this?<\/li>\n<li>Is support required for families or learners?<\/li>\n<li>Who can support with this: Community Learning and Development or Police Scotland?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"ttfmp-panels-item-title-panels-item_186\" class=\"ttfmp-panels-item-title\">\n\tPotential risks<\/div>\n<div id=\"ttfmp-panels-item-content-panels-item_186\" class=\"ttfmp-panels-item-content\">\n<p>Being more cyber resilient reduces the risk of internet safety issues arising. We all want the internet to be a more welcoming space for children and young people and that is why we promote this positive message of safe, smart and kind.<\/p>\n<p>Topics to explore with learners might include are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the people they communicate with \u2013 groups or individually<\/li>\n<li>the platforms they communicate on \u2013 impact of device or context<\/li>\n<li>types of content they might\u00a0<strong>share<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 risk of inappropriate content<\/li>\n<li>the risks of\u00a0<strong>sharing created content<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>the\u00a0<strong>law<\/strong>\u00a0about online communications \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/ukpga\/2003\/21\/section\/127\/2011-06-15\">Communications Act 2003<\/a><\/li>\n<li>the potential risks, and associated harms, the same for everyone \u2013 why are they different, and why does this matter?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"builder-section-panels_194\" class=\"builder-section-prev-panels builder-section class=\"ttfmp-panels-item-content\">\n<p>The first potential vulnerability when communicating online is the device not being securely setup.<\/p>\n<p>Check with learners that they have taken these steps to reduce the risk of someone accessing and communicating with their device without permission:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a\u00a0<em>screenlock\u00a0<\/em>that requires a passcode or biometric (face or fingerprint) to log in to stop\u00a0<strong>unauthorised access (hacking)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>apple devices have a<em>\u00a0content filter<\/em>, called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-gb\/HT212850\">communication safety in Messages,<\/a>\u00a0in their \u2018screen time\u2019 settings that blocks\u00a0<strong>potentially nude content<\/strong>\u00a0from children\u2019s phones<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"ttfmp-panels-item-title-panels-item_196\" class=\"ttfmp-panels-item-title\">\n\tAccounts<\/div>\n<div id=\"ttfmp-panels-item-content-panels-item_196\" class=\"ttfmp-panels-item-content\">\n<p>Another potential vulnerability when communicating online is the accounts on the device or online platform not being secure enough and allowing others to use their device or contact them.<\/p>\n<p>Check with learners that they have taken these steps on their\u00a0<b>apps<\/b>\u00a0to reduce the risk unwanted contact:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>they use device or platform security features, inlcuding password, biometrics or 2FA to ensure only they can access it<\/li>\n<li>they know how to use the settings and security features to set the platform up to\u00a0<strong>only share information they are willing to share<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 this can reduce their \u2018visibility\u2019 and potentially reduce the chances of unwanted contact<\/li>\n<li>they can use the settings and security settings to control\u00a0<strong>who is able to contact them, see\/reply to their posts or direct message them on the to communicate, learners should understand that online platforms and services, including apps, carry <strong>greater risk of being shared without permission<\/strong> as the messages and content on these is almost always <strong>stored on their server,<\/strong> which is the company&#8217;s computer, and not the child or young person&#8217;s device.<\/p>\n<p>Should created content ever be shared with, or without, permission then learners should have the knowledge, skills and support to report and recover from the potential risks associated with this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ceop.police.uk\/Safety-Centre\/Should-I-make-a-report-to-CEOP-YP\/Should-I-make-a-report-to-CEOP-concerned-adult\/\"><b>ANY communication that contains content that depicts child
