Berwickshire High School in Scottish Borders."},"content":{"rendered":"<section id=\"builder-section-text_11\" class=\"builder-section-first builder-section builder-section-text builder-section-last builder-text-columns-2 layout-8\" style=\"background-size: cover;background-position: center center\">\n<div class=\"builder-section-content\">\n<div class=\"builder-text-row\">\n<div id=\"builder-section-text_11-column-1\" class=\"builder-text-column builder-text-column-1\">\n<div class=\"builder-text-content\">\n<div>In this guest blog post, Derek Huffman, PT Pedagogy \/ English Teacher from Berwickshire High School in Scottish Borders, South East Improvement Collaborative, shares what is working well in remote learning and what they can take back to the classrooms as a whole school team when learners return.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div id=\"builder-section-text_11-column-1\" class=\"builder-text-column builder-text-column-1\">\n<div class=\"builder-text-content\">\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One of the many issues facing teachers during \u2018remote learning\u2019 is maintaining high levels of student engagement. It is understandable why, when left to their own devices, a student might reach for their PlayStation controller rather than their school iPad. What can we do to fight this?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At Berwickshire High School, our student engagement spreadsheet suggests that, in some areas, teachers are consistently keeping students coming back for more. After discussing with staff what is working, I found that, though no two people are doing the exact same thing, there are some key commonalities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I\u2019ve pulled these together, with some exemplification, in this seven-minute video:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\"> <div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vnT7m74RQSQ?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Where\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0working, teachers are\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">focussed on the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Simplifying<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: reducing the amount of \u2018stuff\u2019 students are facing to what<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s essential. What is simplest way to word the Learning Intentions?\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Do<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0you need that extra slide?<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Using the success criteria like a checklist<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Having a \u2018consistency of experience\u2019 for the students:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0students know that at\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">this<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0time, they go\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">here<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, where they\u2019ll experience a lesson with a common structure \u2013 starting with daily review, going into a discussion of the Learning Intentions and Success Criteria, followed by teacher modelling and time to complete a task, and ending with a plenary where the teacher checks that the students have learned what they should have.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Giving brief, regular, useful bits of feedback<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that outline next steps<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">None of this is rocket science, but it works. The good news is that these are all the exact same things we\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">should<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0be doing in our actual classrooms. If we can focus on getting this right during these wild times, just think how much more effective we\u2019ll be as teachers when we bring what we\u2019ve learned back into our classrooms!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The majority of teachers I know are being too hard on themselves at the moment. It\u2019s important to remember that we are doing our best, and if you are struggling, call someone. Send an email.
