OneNote is a virtual notebook that makes use of sections and pages, like an organiser, to order learning. The pages can include text, images, video, drawing with virtual ink, and voice recordings – this flexibility makes it effective to evidence learning.

There are built-in accessibility tools that can make it easier for learners to engage with digital apps including typing with their voice, having the screen read to them or even having PowerPoint listen to their presentation and offer feedback on it

Education Scotland have partnered with BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT to deliver this 3 part certified course to develop your knowledge of teaching computing science across the primary curriculum using Barefoot resources. This course is suitable for those already teaching or planning to teach computing science and will help fill potential gaps in knowledge. This is a repeat of the course in term 1 and 2 which was sold out.

16/01/22 4pm Computational Thinking – Critical thinking and problem solving across the curriculum

Computational Thinking, critical thinking and problem-solving top the World Economic list of skills that employers believe will grow in prominence in the next five years. This first session will explore why it’s important for your students to learn computing science and you’ll learn about key computational thinking skills as you give some of Barefoot’s “unplugged” activities a try – proving you don’t need expensive kit to teach computing. You’ll take away a range of lesson ideas you can try immediately with your learners.

16/02/22 4pm Code along with Scratch

Take your computing science knowledge to the next level with this interactive code along session. Get to grips with Scratch programming and the concepts of sequence, repetition and selection through a series of Scratch programming challenges. This workshop will build on the previous session as we explore how computational thinking skills are applied when programming.

23/03/22 4pm Pedagogy and Computing Science

Learn more about key pedagogical approaches to programming, including PRIMM (Predict, Run, Investigate, Modify and Make), Use-Modify-Create, Semantic Waves and Parson’s Problems. We’ll explore each approach through hands-on activities and examples, illustrating how these research-backed teaching and learning methods can be applied in your curriculum.

27th May, 4pm Digital Schools Award – ELC & Primary

Join us to discover how the digital schools award framework can support your setting to lead digital learning, teaching and assessment. Hear from a DSAS validator and leaders from an ELC and Primary setting share how the framework helped transform and embed digital across the curriculum.

Digital Schools Awards is a national awards scheme to promote, recognise and encourage a whole school approach to the use of digital technology in schools.

The Digital Schools Award Scotland is a 3-step programme to help schools assess progress and recognise excellence in the use of digital technology at nursery, primary, special education and secondary level while providing practical support and encouragement.

A staff Glow account will be required to access the Microsoft Team where the session will take place.

01 July, 19:00 – 20:00, Early Learning and Childcare Practitioner Summer Term Digital Meet Up Sessions

The ELC practitioner meet up theme for this week is: Confidence, creativity and curiosity in early level Computing Science –programmable devices, apps and online resources.

This session aims to bring together practitioners working with early level learners from all across the Early Learning and Childcare sector in Scotland.

The session will be an informal, discussion based meet up session, exploring and sharing how ELC practitioners are exploring, introducing and embedding early level computing science experiences and opportunities across the curriculum. 

During the meet up, you will  be able to use the chat option or turn on your microphone/camera to ask questions, talk about resources and share examples of practice and feedback if you so wish, including sharing your screen to show photos and videos if you have the permission to do so. 

This series of meet up sessions are designed around a flipped learning model. Prior to attending the meet up, you are invited to watch a video of the webinar recording. This will ensure you have more flexibility to become familiar with the meet up theme and perhaps try out some of the suggested activities prior to the meet up. 

This session will take place within a Microsoft Teams meeting.

You will NOT require a Glow login for this webinar.

Would you like to enhance your skills, knowledge and confidence in early level digital skills and digital literacy and computing science?

f the answer is ‘yes’ then our summer term ELC practitioner digital meet ups can help you.

The Digital Skills Team at Education Scotland are offering weekly meet up session to discuss various digital topics within the context of ELC.

Each week, a video in relating to the weekly topic will be added to this page, so that you can familiarise yourself with the discussion topic content and information before attending the meet up session. The videos can also be accessed earlier, via the Eventbrite sign up form.

It is a good idea to watch prior the videos before joining the meet up to ensure you have had time to become familiar with the information and perhaps try out some of the suggested activities prior to the meet up.

During the meet up, we will recap the key points from the video, have the opportunity to share thoughts, ask questions and discuss how learning can be taken forward in your own contexts.

The meet ups are for all practitioners working in the early learning and childcare sector in Scotland, based in an ELC setting, school, private/voluntary/independent settings and childminders.

The meet up sessions will be held in a Microsoft Teams meeting, via a join link that will be emailed to you once you have signed up through Eventbrite. You do not require a Glow log in to join.
