By Andrew Collier<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>COMPUTING studies have long been a subject of intense debate within Scottish\u00a0<a class=\"section-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/news\/education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">education<\/a>. At a time when digital skills have never been more important, the number of secondary school teachers having this as their main subject has dropped by more than 20 per cent in the last decade or so.\u00a0This represents nothing less than a core deficiency, as pupils lacking a solid grounding in computing and IT are at a distinct disadvantage when they go on to further or higher education or a job.<\/p>\n<p>Various attempts have been made to resolve the issue, including a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skillsdevelopmentscotland.co.uk\/media\/35682\/ict___digital_technologies_sector_skills_investment_plan.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2014 plan by Skills Development Scotland and ScotlandIS<\/a>. The Logan Review [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.scot\/publications\/scottish-technology-ecosystem-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scottish Technology Ecosystem Review<\/a>], published a few weeks ago, called for computing science to be treated as an essential subject in the same way as maths and physics. By and large Logan has been well received, though some within the sector feel that its ambitions could have gone further. Among them is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalxtrafund.scot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Digital Xtra Fund<\/a>, a Scottish charity created in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Primarily backed by\u00a0<a class=\"section-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/business_hq\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">business<\/a>\u00a0partners including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bailliegifford.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Baillie Gifford<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyscanner.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Skyscanner<\/a>, it provides grants to schools and organisations and aims to inspire the next generation to understand and create with technology.\u00a0Its Partnerships &amp; Development Manager, Kraig Brown, is highly supportive of Logan but believes that one important element is missing. He is concerned that it does not sufficiently address the issue of teaching computing at primary level, particularly through extracurricular activities.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5753 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.digitalxtrafund.scot\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/DigitalXtra02-300x200.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.digitalxtrafund.scot\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/DigitalXtra02-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.digitalxtrafund.scot\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/DigitalXtra02-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.digitalxtrafund.scot\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/DigitalXtra02-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" alt=\"\u201cTech Heroes\u201d at Anderston Primary School in Glasgow\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cLogan talks about treating computing science like maths and formally teaching it from first year at secondary school\u201d, he says. \u201cI\u2019m particularly interested in how we approach digital skills at the primary school level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe report should have included another recommendation stating that a focused and coordinated campaign to upskill all primary school teachers in Scotland in digital skills needs to be undertaken, starting at P5-P7.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, he says, teachers should be given examples and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalxtrafund.scot\/our-partners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">partnerships<\/a>\u00a0to demonstrate how computing skills relate to the real world from the perspective of a primary age pupil. Brown thinks that an introduction to computing at primary level will help to focus the thoughts of pupils at a critical time in their development. \u201cI agree that it needs to be mandatory from S1.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, if you do this, you\u2019re still not going to win over the hearts and minds of young people, and particularly young girls. Even by then, they have a stereotypical impression of what a career [in tech] is.\u201d He strongly believes that coding should be taught at primary level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand that\u2019s easier said than done, and teachers aren\u2019t as confident about this as they probably could be, though some do a fantastic job at this. Again, P5 to P7 would be a good place to start.\u201d Learning basic coding, Brown adds, is no more difficult than learning to read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a distinct memory at the age of seven or eight of learning to code using Logo on an early Apple computer and the feeling of \u2018I did that!\u2019 which came with it. If someone had also told me at that time about the kind of future I could have had with these skills, it would have blown my mind. Why is it that 30 years later we are going backwards at a time when the world becomes more digital?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Creating linkages between teachers and industry has obvious advantages, though he recognises the scale of the challenge. \u201cA big part of what I try to do is to get our partners involved with the extracurricular activities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a lot easier said than done, though. People are working in their Monday to Friday jobs and they maybe aren\u2019t as confident stepping in front of a group of 11 year olds as they would be appearing in the boardroom. They\u2019re not sure how to teach or approach those children and they absolutely do need help from the teachers. But the teachers also need to know how to work that into their time, which is at a premium.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do need to do this though. I appreciate that may mean a couple of other things need to be bumped out [of the teaching programme] and not everyone is going to agree with that. But the way the world is going, we have to do it \u2013 if we don\u2019t our young people will be left behind. Leaving it until S1 is too late.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5752 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.digitalxtrafund.scot\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/DigitalXtra14-resize-300x204.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.digitalxtrafund.scot\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/DigitalXtra14-resize-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.digitalxtrafund.scot\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/DigitalXtra14-resize-768x523.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.digitalxtrafund.scot\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/DigitalXtra14-resize-1024x698.jpg 1024w\" alt=\"Kate Forbes MSP taking part in &quot;Tech Heroes&quot; at Anderston Primary School\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" \/>If this approach is to succeed, he concedes, it will need support from the very top.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHead teachers and deputy heads would need to buy into it before the teachers, but they need resources given to them by Education Scotland, by local authorities, and by the Scottish Government and the SQA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are also plenty of other organisations that could get involved, he adds.\u00a0\u201cThere\u2019s the Edinburgh Science Festival, science clubs \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalxtrafund.scot\/directory-of-resources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">there are loads of bodies that could help<\/a>. I would love every school in Scotland, both primary and secondary, to have a coding club.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also believes that this primary-led approach could help address the gender imbalance in computing as long as it is presented correctly. \u201cDemonstrating the use of technology for good is a brilliant way of engaging more young women \u2013 most girls respond better to collaboration and improving their communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we can apply tech to those concepts, I think we will immediately see an uptick in the number of young females that are interested in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brown also believes the education system needs not to view technology in isolation, but to recognise it blends into other areas. \u201cYou can incorporate it into other things \u2013 digital creativity is huge. Being able to code is only half the battle.\u00a0Being able to come up with something to code is potentially more important. That\u2019s where creativity comes into play \u2013 being able to see where technology fits into what we do now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSitting young people down and teaching them commands isn\u2019t going to work. It\u2019s got to be fun.
