The Curriculum Improvement Cycle (CIC) is Scotland’s long-term approach to reviewing, improving and evolving the curriculum. Established in response to recommendations from a range of independent reviews<\/a> and informed by extensive engagement with children and young people, practitioners, leaders, academics and partners, the CIC provides a structured and systematic process for curriculum review, development and implementation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The work is organised around a ten-year cycle that brings together evidence, professional expertise, research and stakeholder feedback to ensure that Scotland’s curriculum remains relevant, coherent and responsive to the needs of learners and society. The current phase of the cycle is supporting the development of Building Scotland’s Curriculum and the new Know-Do-Understand (KDU) curriculum framework, which will be adopted from August 2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This section brings together the key publications, evidence, resources and background information that have informed the development of the Curriculum Improvement Cycle. It includes the history and rationale for the CIC, major independent reviews and reform publications<\/a>, early discussion papers<\/a>, evidence papers<\/a> commissioned as part of the analysing phase of the cycle, and examples of emerging and draft curriculum materials<\/a>\u00a0shared throughout the co-design process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
