Terminology

Language Matters!

One of the biggest challenges of education reform is that we all use the same words but are actually talking about different things.

Getting the language of the Curriculum Improvement Cycle (CIC) as clear as possible is therefore very important for the success of the programme. We are currently working with a cross-section of practitioners and the Curriculum and Assessment Board (CAB) to clarify a number of key terms to ensure that we are all clear on what we mean, by what we say, as we move forward.

We expect to share this work by the end of 2024 and key terminology will include:

attribute/sbig idea/scapacity/iesconceptcurriculum
curriculum designcurriculum makinginter-disciplinary learning (IDL)knowledgepedagogy
Scotland’s Curriculum Frameworkservice designskill(s)technical frameworktechnical framework

Having absolute clarity on language and removing ‘technical jargon’ was also recommended by the OECD (2021).
