Pop-up event! Insomnia Scotland: 30th April – 2nd May

Following our recent event at the National Museum of Scotland we’re going to be following it up with something a wee bit different.

We’ll be attending Insomnia Scotland over the May Day bank holiday weekend. We have a few sessions planned as well as having an exhibition space throughout the weekend where we’ll be building landmarks and telling anyone who’ll listen about the project.

If you are planning on going along then do come by and say “hello”.

Site refresh and update

If you head over to our BBC website at bbc.co.uk/builditscotland then you’ll notice we have made a few changes to the layout. We wanted to make it as easy as possible to find exactly what you need and so have rearranged the content to (hopefully) make it as easy as possible to navigate around.

If you feel something doesn’t feel quite right or needs pointed up in a different way then please do let us know as we’re eager to please!

At our BBC site you’ll find-

  • information on how to get involved
  • printable PDFs on how to access, download and use Tinkercad, SketchUp and Minecraft software
  • videos of our pilot schools – what went well, what was more challenging and what YOU can get out of the project
  • a series of Bright Spark videos which highlight links between the processes and skills young people will tap into with this project, and jobs in the real world
  • FAQs
  • updates on our live events

We’ll keep adding content as the project continues so do keep checking back in.

Once builds begin to come our way then we’ll produce a gallery to showcase as many as we can. So don’t wait around- get your builds to us and let us show them off for you!

Lochgilphead High School visit their landmark

We’ve uploaded a new video to our BBC Build It Scotland site.

This one follows Lochgilphead High as three of their first year students visit Inveraray Castle to suss out their location ahead of their digital building.

Their teacher, Colin Spark, talks about the progress the children have been making in their project and what he and they are getting out of the project.

Do have a look at the film and at our range of other shorts which cover everything from getting started with Tinkercad, to what it’s like to be a professional Lego builder, to taking part using a Raspberry Pi.

And keep an eye on our site as we’ll be making a few changes over the next week or so. Watch this space!

NMS LIVE build

Last week we held a pop up event in the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. We were there alongside the brilliant Build It exhibition where Warren Elsmore is making all kinds of cool stuff in LEGO.

We added a bit of digital charm and built a very special Edinburgh landmark in Minecraft and Tinkercad with Nethercurrie and Pentland Primary Schools and a few other lovely folk who dropped by to see what was happening (that means YOU Royston Primary!)

Look out for more events between now and the end of the project in October. We have some exciting plans and are keen to get as many people involved as possible.

Hopefully see you soon!

national museum of Scotland – 16th March 2016

We have our first live Build event at the National Museum of Scotland on Wednesday March the 16th.

You can find out all about it at the Festival of Architecture events site where there are loads of other great events you can get involved in throughout the year.

Our event promises to be great fun. We’ll be building with Minecraft and Tinkercad, recreating some of the buildings from the old tales of Greyfriar’s Bobby and Burke and Hare.

Do come along and get involved or just turn up and ask us questions about Build It Scotland. We’d love to meet you!

And if you don’t know it, you should definitely keep an eye on the Festival of Architecture blog too!

‘How to’ guides available NOW

Whether you plan to use Tinkercad, SketchUp, Minecraft, Minecraft Edu or the version available on Raspberry Pi, we have helpful ‘How to’ guides to get you started.

These printable guides will show you how to download and install software  and set up simple networked experiences so that learners can build and play together. Once you’ve done that and are ready to go, our guides will tell you what buttons to press, how to build and design simple structures and how to save buildings and submit your work to us.

If you prefer to be shown what to do, then we have tutorial videos, which talk you through how to start building using this software.

Let us know which buildings or landmarks your class intend on building by emailing builditscotland@bbc.co.uk   We’d love to see how your projects progress so send us photos of your class or group hard at work and we’ll publish them here on our Glow blog.
