Ibrox Primary take over Pacific Quay
Last week Ibrox Primary visited Pacific Quay, home to BBC Scotland in Glasgow, and had a morning of digital skills fun.
We kicked things off with a bit of Minecraft building and our BBC LAB team helped the P6s make a short film about the session.
We also set up some Virtual Reality sessions which the children (not to mention the adults) LOVED and our 3D printing hub provided by the Mitchell Library was a big hit too.
There are lots more photos over at our specially created gallery, so do have a look at what was going on and check out some of the builds which happened in just a couple of hours.
West Primary built their school!
We have started to see some builds coming in now and this one is a real stand-out. The children at West Primary Minecraft Club have reproduced their school and it’s a stunning bit of work. We were knocked out by the level of detail and it’s clear how hard the team have worked.
Check out more submissions in our ever growing gallery. And if you’d like to find out more about how West Primary approached the project then do stop by their blog.
We can’t wait to get the school on our map which is now taking shape given the quality of builds we’ve been sent.
Pop-up event! Insomnia Scotland: 30th April – 2nd May
Following our recent event at the National Museum of Scotland we’re going to be following it up with something a wee bit different.
We’ll be attending Insomnia Scotland over the May Day bank holiday weekend. We have a few sessions planned as well as having an exhibition space throughout the weekend where we’ll be building landmarks and telling anyone who’ll listen about the project.
If you are planning on going along then do come by and say “hello”.
Site refresh and update
If you head over to our BBC website at bbc.co.uk/builditscotland then you’ll notice we have made a few changes to the layout. We wanted to make it as easy as possible to find exactly what you need and so have rearranged the content to (hopefully) make it as easy as possible to navigate around.
If you feel something doesn’t feel quite right or needs pointed up in a different way then please do let us know as we’re eager to please!
At our BBC site you’ll find-
- information on how to get involved
- printable PDFs on how to access, download and use Tinkercad, SketchUp and Minecraft software
- videos of our pilot schools – what went well, what was more challenging and what YOU can get out of the project
- a series of Bright Spark videos which highlight links between the processes and skills young people will tap into with this project, and jobs in the real world
- FAQs
- updates on our live events
We’ll keep adding content as the project continues so do keep checking back in.
Once builds begin to come our way then we’ll produce a gallery to showcase as many as we can. So don’t wait around- get your builds to us and let us show them off for you!
NMS LIVE build
Last week we held a pop up event in the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. We were there alongside the brilliant Build It exhibition where Warren Elsmore is making all kinds of cool stuff in LEGO.
We added a bit of digital charm and built a very special Edinburgh landmark in Minecraft and Tinkercad with Nethercurrie and Pentland Primary Schools and a few other lovely folk who dropped by to see what was happening (that means YOU Royston Primary!)
Look out for more events between now and the end of the project in October. We have some exciting plans and are keen to get as many people involved as possible.
Hopefully see you soon!
national museum of Scotland – 16th March 2016
We have our first live Build event at the National Museum of Scotland on Wednesday March the 16th.
You can find out all about it at the Festival of Architecture events site where there are loads of other great events you can get involved in throughout the year.
Our event promises to be great fun. We’ll be building with Minecraft and Tinkercad, recreating some of the buildings from the old tales of Greyfriar’s Bobby and Burke and Hare.
Do come along and get involved or just turn up and ask us questions about Build It Scotland. We’d love to meet you!
And if you don’t know it, you should definitely keep an eye on the Festival of Architecture blog too!

Cathkin Primary are go
Today I was invited out to Cathkin Primary to meet the P7s who are taking part in Build It Scotland.
When I arrived the class were already hard at work making adjustments to some of the builds they had started earlier this week. Last week they started off by researching landmarks and gathering images. From there they produced plans of their locations to get a sense of scale, shape and positioning of main features.
Mr Frame explained that they had started off by installing Minecraft on the school PCs but that a recent update had stopped it running. So as not to let the children down, they had migrated over to tablets. The class has three iPads and the children who have a tablet at home can bring their’s in- I spotted a few iPads and some Android tablets too.
Walking around the smaller groups of 2 – 3/4 students I spotted a few Stirling Castles, an Edinburgh Castle and a really colourful Glasgow SSE Hydro.
I spoke to one group who had started off with Nessie in her Loch, moved onto the fountain at the People’s Palace in Glasgow Green but had now settled on Kingston Bridge. Quite the train of thought!
The session ended with a quick peer-to-peer evaluation of some of the work, paying attention to scale and form in particular, and a look at what the next session’s starting point might be.
What a brilliant end to the week. Thanks for having me Cathkin Primary 🙂
